Genesis Study 120 – Key verses: Genesis 50:22-26

Foundational themes in Genesis – Study 120 (Key verses: Genesis 50:22-26)

We conclude our discussions on foundational themes in Genesis with the final section of this book where the death of Joseph is detailed. The theme of death is indeed the story of the first Adam and here with the death of Joseph certain aspects of this theme are again highlighted for us. Joseph lived in Egypt since he was seventeen years old until the time of his death at the age of a hundred and ten years – in total he lived ninety three years in Egypt, which includes the eighty years as a ruler (Gen 37:2-36; Gen 41:46). The number eighty has the numbers eight and ten connected to it which in spiritual terms refers respectively to the new man in Christ and the completeness of flesh. It is indeed the new man who reigns over the flesh as Joseph also is a type of the elect and their time of rulership (Oba 1:21; 1Cor 6:2-3; Rev 20:4-15):

Gen 50:22 And Joseph dwelt in Egypt, he, and his father’s house: and Joseph lived an hundred and ten years.

During his time of rulership in Egypt God also used Joseph to bring his own family down to Egypt. But all of that was initiated when his ten brothers sold Joseph to traders who in turn sold him as a slave in Egypt. But the natural man cannot see that all man’s thoughts and acts are caused by God, and everyone is actually contributing to fulfil God’s purposes whether through the good or the evil:

Foundational themes in Genesis – Study 119 (Key verses: Genesis 50:14-21)

The theme of death concludes the book of Genesis which brings such important spiritual aspects to the fore. Through the time of mourning, the preparations for the funeral and the burying of the dead corpse so much can be spiritually gleaned how we are to deal with our old man. The elect of God knows that through the baptism into the death of Jesus, dominion over sin and freedom from the bondages of our old man are indeed achieved (Rom 6:9-17):

Rom 6:1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?
Rom 6:2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?
Rom 6:3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?
Rom 6:4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
Rom 6:5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:
Rom 6:6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified [Greek aorist tense = an ongoing process] with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
Rom 6:7 For he that is dead is freed from sin.

Foundational themes in Genesis – Study 118 (Key verses: Genesis 50:4-13)

The theme of death concludes the book of Genesis as we read about the deaths of two of its more prominent characters, namely Jacob and Joseph. First we read about the death of Jacob after he lived for seventeen years in Egypt:

Gen 49:33 And when Jacob had made an end of commanding his sons, he gathered up his feet into the bed, and yielded up the ghost, and was gathered unto his people.

In our previous discussions on this theme of death we touched on how we all are first “gathered unto [our] people” in spiritual death via the first Adam before we will be “gathered unto [God’s] people” in Jesus Christ by dying to that old man Adam in us (Gen 2:7; Jer 18:4; Rom 5:12; Rom 8:20; 1Cor 15:22-31). It is indeed through death that God ordained that His children will eventually “find” spiritual life through Jesus Christ:

God is the only Creator of all things, including the evil and the darkness:

Isa 45:5 I am the LORD, and there is none else, there is no God beside me: I girded thee, though thou hast not known me:
Isa 45:6 That they may know from the rising of the sun, and from the west, that there is none beside me. I am the LORD, and there is none else.
Isa 45:7 I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil [Hebrew: “ra”]: I the LORD do all these things.

Foundational themes in Genesis – Study 116 (Key verses: Genesis 49:28-33)

The book of Genesis opens with the record of the creation narrative, and in a sense it reveals a birth process which took six days (Gen 1:1-31; Exo 20:11). The beginning of physical life is also seen in two individuals namely Adam and Eve. But Genesis on the other hand closes with the record of the end of two lives, that of Jacob and Joseph. For the natural mind any book that concludes with death is indeed not a good ending for a book. But the theme of death is one of the most powerful themes in the book of Genesis and the entire scriptures. If we have been given eyes to see the plan of God with the first Adam we will also see that death is but a temporary creation of God through which He will bring forth a glorious new creation (Gen 2:7; Gen 3:19; Job 7:7; Ps 90:5-6; Ps 144:4; Jas 4:14; 1Cor 15:22-28). For them who can receive this truth it is clear that God has created death as a means by which the first Adam must live first, before God is bringing His splendid spiritual creation for all in Adam, for everyone in his own order:

1Co 15:22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.
1Co 15:23 But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ’s at his coming.
1Co 15:24 Then cometh the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when he shall have put down [Hebrew: “katargeō” – to render something entirely useless] all rule and all authority and power.
1Co 15:25 For he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet.
1Co 15:26 The last enemy that shall be destroyed [Hebrew: “katargeō”] is death.

The theme of “the last days” helps us to understand the time of the harvest or judgement in our lives when we are able to see the road behind us through which the Lord has brought us. This is also how the apostle John was enlightened when he heard the “great voice as of a trumpet” behind him and he was given to understand the revelation of Jesus in him:

God’s Word has a primary spiritual meaning which is the inward application for those who can see that they live by every word that proceeded out of God’s mouth, even the words of scripture (Matt 4:4; Joh 6:63; Rev 1:3). Jacob’s final words to his sons are therefore important to take note of as they help us to understand our own lives:

Gen 49:1 And Jacob called unto his sons, and said, Gather yourselves together, that I may tell you that which shall befall you in the last days.

Foundational themes in Genesis – Study 103 (Key verses: Genesis 46:28-34; Gen 47:1-26)

All things in the scriptures have both a negative and positive application and that helps us to understand that God is the sovereign Creator of both good and evil and that He works both of these to fulfil His purposes in this creation, even as we all live “by every word that proceeded out of the mouth of God” (Isa 45:5-7; Matt 4:4; Rom 11:36; Eph 1:11). This spiritual mystery is inherent in the way God uses His Word, even Jesus Christ, as revealed through the pillar of cloud during physical Israel’s wanderings in the wilderness (Col 1:15-20; Rev 1:8):

Exo 14:19 And the angel of God, which went before the camp of Israel, removed and went behind them; and the pillar of the cloud went from before their face, and stood behind them:
Exo 14:20 And it came between the camp of the Egyptians and the camp of Israel; and it was a cloud and darkness to them, but it gave light by night to these: so that the one came not near the other all the night.

Foundational themes in Genesis – Study 102 (Key verses: Genesis 46:1-30)

The book of Genesis provides a beautiful foundation for the whole process through which God will bring all in the first man Adam to spiritual maturity. This all starts off with the establishment of a physical six day creation which also reflects the spiritual work of God within this first Adam in each person which is all completed on the seventh day (Gen 1:1-31; Gen 2:1-3). Through the creation of heaven and earth two opposing dimensions were also established by God which replicates the two generational lines through Adam:

Gen 3:13 And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.
Gen 3:14 And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:
Gen 3:15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

Foundational themes in Genesis – Study 100 (Key verses: Gen 44:14-34; Gen 45:1-8)

The theme of spiritual glorification is highlighted for us in the life of Joseph in the book of Genesis. God’s elect is the first to be given spiritual glorification as they are also the first to be taken through the process of judgement (1Pet 4:17). This judgement was typified in Joseph’s life firstly through the hatred and jealousy from his ten brothers and also during the thirteen years of working as a slave and even imprisoned in Egypt. Joseph did nothing wrong which merited this treatment except openly confessing and living his righteous calling…it was all after the counsel of God’s will (Gen 45:7; Gen 50:20; Eph 1:11). For those on whom “the spirit of glory and of God resteth” this was written to show how the “reproach for the name of Christ” is linked to spiritual glorification:

1Pe 4:14 If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified.
1Pe 4:15 But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or as a thief, or as an evildoer, or as a busybody in other men’s matters.
1Pe 4:16 Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf.
1Pe 4:17 For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?

Foundational themes in Genesis – Study 99 (Key verses: Gen 44:1-13)

In our theme of spiritual glorification as typified in the life of Joseph, the role which money or silver played in the interaction between Joseph and his brothers is very significant. The words “money” and “silver” appears 19 times in the interaction between Joseph and his brothers and in these instances both these words are translated from the one Hebrew word “keseph” (ref.: Gen 37:28; Gen 42:25; Gen 42:27-28 (2); Gen 42:35 (2); Gen 43:12 (2); Gen 43:15; Gen 43:18; Gen 43:21-23 (5); Gen 44:1-2 (3); Gen 44:8). The spiritual application of money or silver (“keseph”) helps us to see how we first live through the negative application of this “keseph” being ensnared by the spirit of the world:

1Jn 2:16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

Genesis Study 098 – Key Sections from Genesis chapters 41 to 43

Foundational themes in Genesis – Study 98 (Sections from Genesis chapters 41 to chapter 43)

The life of Joseph as described in the book of Genesis is our type of spiritual glorification. It is indeed through much tribulation and being sacrificed on the altar that spiritual glorification in the kingdom of God is obtained (Exo 29:36; Acts 14:22; Rom 12:1; Heb 13:10; 1Pet 4; Rev 15:8). Within the theme of spiritual glorification we learn through the scriptures that God’s main objective at this time is to bring His elect to be the first to have rulership and dominion over flesh (Rom 6:1-14). This rulership is established in the revelation of who the Christ is and what the purpose and function of this Christ is in God’s plan to eventually bring all of this carnal creation to spirit life in Him, even all in the first man Adam (1Co 1:13; 1Co 6:15; 1Co 12:12; 1Co 15:22; Eph 4:10-15; 1Jn 2:20-25). But rulership in God’s kingdom is focussed on totally different aspects than the focus of the carnal mind, and these aspects are what the elect learn to apply firstly in themselves and then to discern with whom they can share it with:

Mat 20:25 But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Ye know that the princes [Greek: “archōn” = rulers] of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them.
Mat 20:26 But it shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister;
Mat 20:27 And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant:
Mat 20:28 Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom [Greek: “lutron” = a redemption price / and atonement] for many.

Foundational themes in Genesis – Study 97 (Key sections from Genesis chapters 41 to chapter 43)

After suffering many trials and tribulations for seventeen years in Egypt, Joseph is given rulership in Egypt under the Pharaoh after Joseph gave him wise counsel concerning his two dreams (Gen 41:14-46). Pharaoh also acknowledged that Joseph was “a man in whom the Spirit of God is” and that he was indeed “discreet and wise” (Gen 41:38-39). In the first seven years of plenty in Egypt under Joseph’s rulership, he stored up food from every part of the country and the corn was “as the sand of the sea, very much, until he left numbering; for it was without number” (Gen 41:47-49). This great provision period links to the symbolic thousand year period when the elect will reign on the earth after they were part of the first resurrection (Rev 20:4-6). It is also within the time of Joseph’s rulership that the seven years of famine came on the whole earth which forced all the countries to come to Joseph to buy food:

Gen 41:56 And the famine was over all the face of the earth: And Joseph opened all the storehouses, and sold unto the Egyptians; and the famine waxed sore in the land of Egypt.
Gen 41:57 And all countries came into Egypt to Joseph for to buy corn; because that the famine was so sore in all lands.

Foundational themes in Genesis – Study 96 (Key verses: Genesis 41:39-57; Gen 42:1-24)

The life of Joseph provides us with a beautiful picture of what the elect of God is to endure to eventually reach their place of rulership over their flesh and all its pride and lusts (Rom 6:14). This rulership of God’s elect will also be fulfilled in the symbolic thousand year reign on earth and through the work of the elect being the lake of fire for all the rest of humanity (1Cor 6:2-3: Rev 20:4-15). Within this theme of spiritual glorification we see that we are ordained by God to suffer at the hand of our brothers and to be placed into slavery and captivity in our Egypt, which all points to our time in bondage or prison of flesh (Exo 2:23; Exo 20:2; Pro 5:22; Rom 6:20; Rev 11:8). In the final section of Joseph’s story we see him being summoned to appear before the Pharaoh:

Gen 41:14 Then Pharaoh sent and called Joseph, and they brought him hastily out of the dungeon: and he shaved himself, and changed his raiment, and came in unto Pharaoh.

Foundational themes in Genesis – Study 95 (Sections from Genesis 37 – 41)

Within this theme of spiritual glorification we are confronted with many aspects God’s elect must endure within the process of being seated together with Christ in rulership over the earth and the heaven (Matt 20:28; Eph 2:6; 1Cor 6:2-3; Rev 20:4-15). One of these aspects is physical confinement or imprisonment, even in terms of its spiritual application in this age. This concept of physical imprisonment firstly appears in the scriptures in the life of Joseph. Many people mentioned in the scriptures also experienced physical imprisonment – a few names that come to mind includes Samson and some of the prophets in the Old Testament like Jeremiah, Micaiah, Zedekiah and Daniel. In the New Testament we read about physical imprisonment in the lives of John the Baptist, Peter, James, John, Silas, Paul, Epaphras, Aristarchus, Junia…even Jesus was physically laid hands on and incarcerated:

Mat 26:50 And Jesus said unto him [Judas], Friend, wherefore art thou come? Then came they [the “great crowd with swords and clubs, being sent from the chief priests and elders of the people”], and laid hands on Jesus, and took him.

The theme of spiritual glorification is intimately connected to the caring for God’s flock and the salvation of all, as we also see typified in the life of Joseph. The following words come from the mouth of Joseph as written in scripture. These words Joseph spoke to his brothers after they sold him to slave traders who brought him to Egypt where he eventually through much tribulation ended up as ruler in Egypt under the Pharaoh:

Gen 45:5

Genesis is the book of beginnings or the book of generations and here God established certain principles which are foundational in our spiritual growth. We know that the end of a thing is better than its beginning, but the beginning initiates the process (Ecc 7:8). Through the first man Adam God focusses on the generations of certain individuals in this book – among these the names of Noah, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob stand out before we come to the last section of Genesis. In this last section of Genesis we meet one of Jacob’s sons, namely Joseph, and all this man had to endure to reach rulership. Genesis highlights the process in us of being brought from spiritual darkness to the marvellous light of Christ of which the first chapter gives us a general overview (Jer 18:4; Joh 1:1-5; Act 26:18; 1Cor 15:22; Eph 1:17-23; Eph 5:8). Here are the first five verses of chapter 1 of Genesis which introduce this whole salvation process through Christ, the beginning and end of this process (Col 1:13-17; John 1:1-4; Rev 1:8; Rev 3:14):

Gen 1:1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
Gen 1:2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
Gen 1:3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.
Gen 1:4 And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.
Gen 1:5 And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.

The theme of spiritual glorification in scripture as revealed through the life of Joseph in the Old Testament, helps us to understand elected rulership in God’s kingdom (Rom 5:2; 2Co 3:18; Col 1:27; Eph 1:4-6; Rev 4:4-6). To be seated on the thrones in God’s kingdom is reserved for His elected sons whom He foreknew and predestined to rule on earth in the symbolic thousand years and also to be the judges in the lake of fire (Mat 19:28; 1John 3:2; Rev 20:4-15; 1Cor 6:2-3):

Rom 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.
Rom 8:29 For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.
Rom 8:30 Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified [Greek aorist tense].

Foundational themes in Genesis – Study 91 (Key verses: Gen 35:21-29: Gen 37:1-2)

The book of Genesis starts with a general picture of the creation of this physical world with the focus on one individual, the first man Adam. All of these physical things or visible things of creation are used by God to serve as types of an inward spiritual process which He is working to bring His spirit life through another individual, the last Adam, even Jesus Christ, through whom all things actually have their being from the beginning to the conclusion of this process (Rom 1:20; Rom 5:14; Acts 17:28; John 1-1-5; Col 1:15-19; Rev 1:8):

1Co 15:45 And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit.

Foundational themes in Genesis – Study 89 (Key verses: Gen 34:1-31)

The theme of sanctification in scripture deals with the perfecting of the elect of God to be a “vessel unto honour…and meet for the master’s use, and prepared unto every good work” (2Ti 2:21). Through this process of sanctification we are being separated for ministry in the service to God and His church first and foremost, but also being prepared to be of service to the rest of humanity in due time (Jer 1:5; Act 13:2; 1Cor 12:1-31; Eph 4:1-24; 1Cor 6:2-3; Rev 20). The apostle Paul is also testifying about this sanctified position through which the elect of God is made whole in every aspect (Ecc 12:13; Rom 6:18; Rom 12:1; 2Co 3:18; Php 1:6; Php 3:21):

Rom 1:1 (ESV) Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God,

Jacob was initially described in the scriptures as a deceiver and manipulator, but in the process of serving Laban for twenty years for his two daughters and securing a flock of animals for himself, Jacob is taken through a process of sanctification to become the type of the true servant of God, Jesus Christ. The theme of sanctification helps us to see how we are positioned by God to take up the proper place to be of service to God and His church, and to all in the first Adam eventually (Act 26:13-18; 1Cor 12:4-7; 1Cor 6:2-3; 1Pe 2:9; Rev 20). This includes the process whereby the old man in us is being supplanted by the new man in Jesus Christ (Rom 5:10-21; 2Co 5:15-17; Col 1:13). This is the prayer and purpose of Jesus for His elect in this age (Rom 15:15-16; Eph 5:26-27; 2Ti 2:21):

Joh 17:15 I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil.
Joh 17:16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
Joh 17:17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

Under the theme of sanctification through servanthood, the life of Jacob is one of the examples given to typify how God works this process to set His elect apart to bring them to be truthful servants to Him and His people (Exo 28:41; Exo 29:44; Joh 17:17; Eph 5:27; Col 3:24; Rom 12:1; 1Th 1:3-5).

We meet Jacob in the scriptures as a deceiver and manipulator and with this carnal frame of mind Jacob was not ready as yet to be of service to God and his people. Jacob manipulated Esau out of the rights of the firstborn and also received the blessing of the inheritance of the firstborn from his father Isaac through evil scheming with the help of his mother Rebekah (Gen 25:29-34; Gen 27:6-29). But taking possession of the inheritance is a trying and painful process as Jacob also discovered. He had to leave Canaan to flee from Esau who wanted to kill him, and Jacob lived in Haran in Mesopotamia where he worked for his uncle Laban for 20 years for his two daughters, Leah and Rachel, and also to establish his own flock (Gen 27:42-45; Gen 31:4-7; Gen 30:25-43). Jacob again had to flee, this time from Laban to cross over the river Euphrates to get back into the land which God promised to Abraham and his offspring, even to Jacob (Gen 15:18; Deu 11:24):

Gen 31:3 And the LORD said unto Jacob, Return unto the land of thy fathers, and to thy kindred; and I will be with thee.

Foundational themes in Genesis – Study 86 (Key verses: Gen 31:1-55)

The foundational theme of sanctification is helping us to see our own road from being created a marred vessel of clay with a deceitful heart to be conformed in the spiritual image of God having His mind (Gen 2:7; Jer 17:9; Jer 18:4; Rom 8:20; 1Cor 15:22-28; 2Ti 2:21). Jacob is given to us as one of the types of this process of sanctification as he started off as a deceiver and manipulator to be taken through his time of service for his two wives and for his flock to become God’s trusted servant (Gen 2:19; Gen 25:29-34; Gen 27:6-29; Gen 27:42-45). Every aspect of our lives will go through this Jacob-process as it will be repeated several times throughout our lives to get all aspects of the old Adam’s carnal heart in us exposed and supplanted by the new heart of Christ (Eze 11:19; Eze 36:26; 1Co 2:9-10). After Jacob worked fourteen years for the two daughters of Laban, Leah and Rachel, he also arranged to work another six years to build up his own flock (Gen 29:25-30; Gen 30:27-36). God ordained that Jacob supernaturally bred a huge flock through the unusual brown, ringstraked, speckled and spotted offspring from the flock of Laban, which Jacob received in a dream but only told this revelation from God to Rachel and Leah just before they left Haran:

Gen 31:7 And your father hath deceived me, and changed my wages ten times; but God suffered him not to hurt me.
Gen 31:8 If he said thus, The speckled shall be thy wages; then all the cattle bare speckled: and if he said thus, The ringstraked shall be thy hire; then bare all the cattle ringstraked.
Gen 31:9 Thus God hath taken away the cattle of your father, and given them to me.
Gen 31:10 And it came to pass at the time that the cattle conceived, that I lifted up mine eyes, and saw in a dream, and, behold, the rams which leaped upon the cattle were ringstraked, speckled, and grisled.
Gen 31:11 And the angel of God spake unto me in a dream, saying, Jacob: And I said, Here am I.
Gen 31:12 And he said, Lift up now thine eyes, and see, all the rams which leap upon the cattle are ringstraked, speckled, and grisled: for I have seen all that Laban doeth unto thee.

Foundational themes in Genesis – Study 85 (Key verses: Gen 30:25-43; Gen 31:9-13)

The life of Jacob was written down for us to see our own road of being sanctified to be God’s true servants. Jacob’s name means “heel catcher” or “supplanter” because that is the way he came out of the womb of his mother, Rebekah, holding on to the heel of his twin brother, Esau. In the scriptures a name relates to the nature of that person and this nature of being a supplanter in Jacob was further manifested when Jacob took away the rights of the firstborn from Esau, and also with the help of his mother, Rebekah, received the blessing of the inheritance of the firstborn (Gen 2:19; Gen 25:29-34; Gen 27:6-29; Gen 27:42-45). Fleeing from the fury of Esau, Jacob was sent to Haran to Rebekah’s brother, Laban, to also look for a wife there (Gen 27:43; Gen 28:2; Gen 28:10). On His way to Haran, God appeared to Jacob in a dream where God confirmed the promise of a land and an offspring to Jacob, as God also made this covenant with his grandfather Abraham, and his father Isaac:

Gen 28:12 And he dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven: and behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it.
Gen 28:13 And, behold, the LORD stood above it, and said, I am the LORD God of Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac: the land whereon thou liest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed;
Gen 28:14 And thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and thou shalt spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south: and in thee and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed.
Gen 28:15 And, behold, I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places whither thou goest, and will bring thee again into this land; for I will not leave thee, until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of.

Foundational themes in Genesis – Study 84 (Key verses: Gen 29:31-35; Gen 30:1-24)

Joh 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

God loves the world, pointing to all in the first Adam as they are all linked to the process of eventually being conformed to the spiritual image of the last Adam, Jesus Christ, who is the ultimate focus of this love of God (John 3:6; Rom 8:29; 1Cor 15:22). God created the first Adam, and all in him, in a marred condition and they will all receive spirit life through the gift of the faith of the last Adam, Jesus Christ, whom the Father appointed as the Saviour of all in the world of the first Adam (Jer 18:4; Eph 2:8-9; 1Ti 4:10; Tit 2:11-13; Tit 3:3-6; 1Jn 4:14). God does not love the natural man and all in this physical creation the way He loves the new man in Christ and He advises His elect to have the same focus:

1Jn 2:15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
1Jn 2:16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
1Jn 2:17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.

Foundational themes in Genesis – Study 83 (Key verses: Gen 29:14-30)

We are discussing the foundational theme of sanctification through servanthood for God’s elect as typified in the life of Jacob. Jacob had to leave his family in Canaan because of the threats on his life from his twin brother Esau, because Jacob robbed Esau from the rights of the firstborn, and also with the help of his mother, Rebekah, received the blessing of the inheritance of the firstborn (Gen 25:29-34; Gen 27:6-29; Gen 27:42-45). Rebekah however gave another reason to Isaac when she asked him to send Jacob to her brother Laban to be protected from the women of Canaan, to which Isaac agreed (Gen 27:46; Gen 28:1-5). But Jacob will learn that taking possession of the inheritance will only come through a painful process of sanctification through which God sets His elect apart for service to Him and His people (Exo 28:41; Exo 29:44; Joh 17:17; Eph 5:27; Col 3:24; Rom 12:1; 1Th 1:3-5). Jacob’s selfish and deceitful nature needed purging:

2Ti 2:21 If a man therefore purge himself from these [selfish deceitful nature and all the “profane and vain babblings” (false beliefs)– 2Tim 2:16-20], he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master’s use, and prepared unto every good work.

“In times past” the elect of God has indeed “walked according to the course of this world” being ruled by an evil and deceptive heart and mind which God created in this marred vessel of clay (Gen 1:1-2; Gen 2:7; Isa 45:7; Jer 18:4; Rom 8:6-7; Rom 8:20):

Eph 2:2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:

Abraham is given to us in scripture as a type of how spiritual justification is obtained only by the faith of Jesus (Gal 2:16; Gal 3:22). Jesus is the true Father of all nations in the generation of the first Adam (Rom 4:16-17):

Rom 4:13 For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.

Rulership in both earth (the “visible”) and heaven (the “invisible”) is the powerful inheritance of God’s firstborn, Jesus Christ (Matt 28:18; Rev 3:14; Col 1:15-16). This rulership is what Jesus also promised to all His spiritual sons, even in the thousand year reign on earth, and the time of judgement over those in the spiritual age in the lake of fire (Rev 20:4-15). These sons are the symbolic twenty four elders seated with Christ in judgement (Deu 7:6; Luk 12:41-44; Eph 2:6; 1Pet 2:9). The number twelve spiritually represents foundations and these sons of God will have authority over the foundations of the earth and the foundations of heaven (Gen 17:20; 1Cor 3:11):

Luk 22:29 And I appoint unto you a kingdom, as my Father hath appointed unto me;
Luk 22:30 That ye may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

Foundational themes in Genesis – Study 79 (Key verses: Gen 27:14-41)

In our last discussions on the theme of sonship in Genesis the focus was slowly shifting away from Isaac, the son of Abraham, to Jacob. In his old age Isaac was losing his vision physically, but spiritually he also could not distinguish the true elected son, namely Jacob. Isaac attached himself to Esau instead and became progressively more dependent on his earthly desires and senses. Spiritual maturity is measured by how we have grown (“because of use”) to distinguish truthfully between right and wrong, good and evil, the called and the chosen. This all important discernment is restricted by God through His extremely strong and powerful work called delusion, which is now witnessed in Isaac (2Co 10:7; 2Co 11:14-15; 2Thes 2:11). Isaac depended on his earthly senses and could not eat the solid food of spiritual discernment:

Heb 5:14 But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, even those who because of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

In Genesis 27 we read about a very sad time which occurred in the household of Isaac and Rebekah. What started off as one of the most beautiful love stories in the scripture is now turning into divisions and deceit. Although the two sons of Isaac and Rebekah, Esau the elder brother of Jacob, was already striving in their mother’s womb, this jostling intensified as time passed and as they grew older the separation between them increases as also in the parents’ love for these sons:

Gen 25:27 And the boys grew: and Esau was a cunning hunter, a man of the field; and Jacob was a plain man, dwelling in tents.
Gen 25:28 And Isaac loved Esau, because he did eat of his venison: but Rebekah loved Jacob.

The foundational theme of sonship in Genesis helps us to appreciate and understand the deep spiritual privileges God bestows on those to whom He gives undeservedly this highest honour. Spiritual sonship is by invitation from the Father only to be conformed to the spiritual image of Jesus Christ, whom was given preeminence or headship in this regard (1Ch 29:18; John 6:44; Col 1:18). These sons of God, who are the house of God in His firstborn Jesus Christ, are progressively given possession and control of their own “vessel” with all its lusts and pride in this carnal age, even as they will also judge others in the lake of fire in the spiritual age to come (Gen 22:17; Exo 23:29-30; 1John 2:16; Rev 20:11-15):

Rom 6:14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.

Foundational themes in Genesis – Study 76 (Key verses: Gen 25:22-34)

Spiritual sonship is a theme in the scriptures which highlights God’s purpose with mankind, which in this life is reserved for those few whom He is conforming to the image of His Son, Jesus Christ (John 1:1-4; Col 1:15-19; Rev 3:14). Jesus is God’s preeminent creation as He is above everything and He alone has immortality or spiritual perfection at this stage with the Father (1Tim 6:15-16; Eph 1:13-14). This glorious conforming process in the few elected ones is marked with fiery trials and much tribulation to make these sons of God perfect (Rom 8:29; 1Pet 4:12; Acts 14:22; Heb 2:10; Heb 12:4-7):

Rom 8:22-25 (Phillips NT) It is plain to anyone with eyes to see that at the present time all created life groans in a sort of universal travail. And it is plain, too, that we who have a foretaste of the Spirit are in a state of painful tension, while we wait for that redemption of our bodies which will mean that at last we have realised our full sonship in him. We were saved by this hope, but in our moments of impatience let us remember that hope always means waiting for something that we haven’t yet got. But if we hope for something we cannot see, then we must settle down to wait for it in patience.

Foundational themes in Genesis – Study 74 (Key verses: Gen 25:12-18)

The book of Genesis is named after the Greek word “genesis” which has its Hebrew equivalent in the word “tôledâh” which appears at least 13 times in the book of Genesis and is translated as “generations” (Gen 2:4; Gen 5:1; Gen 6:9 (2); Gen 10:1; Gen 10:32; Gen 11:10; Gen 11:27; Gen 25:12-13 (2); Gen 25:19; Gen 36:1; Gen 36:9; Gen 37:2). Generational lines are given to help us understand God’s way of working with mankind. First of all the created generations which God works with are divided into two opposing dimensions called heaven and earth:

Gen 1:1 In the beginning [Hebrew: rê’shı̂yth = first in order / firstfruit] God created the heaven and the earth.

Gen 2:4 These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens.

The book of Genesis reveals mankind’s biggest needs which consume his whole life from beginning to end. The first man Adam was created void of spirit life and was formed in a corruptible earthy body of sin and death (Gen 1:2; Gen 2:7; Ps 51:5-7; Jer 18:4; Mat 6:19; Mat 7:17; Act 13:33-34; Rom 1:23; Rom 6:6; Rom 7:24; 1Cor 15:45). The wedding supper of the bridegroom, Jesus Christ, and all the preparations the Father is making for that feast, is the most beautiful love story ever told. Finding a wife is indeed a good thing and that opens the favour of God, especially for the bride of Christ, His church (Pro 18:22; 1Cor 11:3; Eph 5:31-33). The coming together of Christ and His church fills our hearts with great joy and gladness even through the severe trials we have to endure to get into that elected and faithful initial few:

In Genesis chapter 24 we see the longest chapter in the book of Genesis which will be divided into four segments for the purpose of our discussions:

• Verses 1 to 10: Abraham gives specific instructions to his servant about a wife for Isaac;
• Verses 11 to 28: the servant of Abraham went to find this wife and meet Rebekah;
• Verses 29 to 61: the servant of Abraham meets the family of Rebekah;
• Verses 62 to 68: Isaac meets Rebekah and takes her as his wife.

In our last discussion we covered verses 1 to 10 of this chapter where Abraham at a mature age gave specific instructions to the elder servant in his household in connection with the special task of acquiring a wife for Isaac. This servant is not named in this chapter, but some suppose it to be Eliezer of Damascus which was mentioned in Genesis 15 as a very trustworthy servant for Abraham (Gen 15:1-2). Abraham, as a loving father to Isaac, typifies our heavenly Father who sends His servants throughout the history of the church to bring the bride to Christ, as Christ is also typified by Isaac (Mat 22:1-3; Rev 19:7; Rev 20:4-6; Rom 9:7; Gal 3:29). All of this displays the faith of Abraham which he also instils in this servant to fulfil the task at hand. It is the faith of Christ in us which the Father sends in our hearts through His Word to draw us to Christ and His bride, His true church (Rom 10:17; Gal 2:16; Rom 4:16-22; Gal 2:16; Gal 3:6-9; Php 3:9; Heb 11:8-10):

Joh 6:44 No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.

The faith of Christ is a foundational truth of the doctrine of Christ, but faith also abides now and is in the end an essential part of the mature fruit of the spirit, if we are to please God (Heb 11:6):

Heb 6:1-3 Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, 2 Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment. 3 And this will we do, if God permit.

In our previous discussion we saw how God intervened to save Isaac’s life after God revealed Abraham’s obedient heart of faithfulness to His commandments. The scripture says Abraham received Isaac back from the dead in a figure as he already accepted Isaac’s death (Heb 11:17-19). After this event on mount Moriah as recorded in Genesis 22, the scriptures added a few names in the last section of this chapter which seem to have no relation to this trial of Abraham’s faith. But this all prepares us for what is about to take place in Abraham’s household:

Gen 22:20-24 And it came to pass after these things, that it was told Abraham, saying, Behold, Milcah, she hath also born children unto thy brother Nahor; 21 Huz his firstborn, and Buz his brother, and Kemuel the father of Aram, 22 And Chesed, and Hazo, and Pildash, and Jidlaph, and Bethuel. 23 And Bethuel begat Rebekah: these eight Milcah did bear to Nahor, Abraham’s brother. 24 And his concubine, whose name was Reumah, she bare also Tebah, and Gaham, and Thahash, and Maachah.

The foundational theme of “faith toward God” is beautifully revealed through the faith of Abraham as one of the types given in the scriptures to show us how the faith of Christ in us works and takes us to spiritual maturity through the chastening grace of God (Heb 6:1-2; Rom 4:16; Php 3:9; Eph 2:8-10; 1Cor 13:13):

Tit 2:11-12 For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, 12 Teaching [Greek: “paideuō” = discipline by punishment] us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world.

We are discussing the foundational theme of faith as we are learning from Abraham as God’s Old Testament type of the route the faith of Christ will take us on. The faith of Christ opens up His refreshing waters through His Word as Christ and His Word is the true well of living water (Joh 7:37-39):

Joh 4:13-15 Jesus answered and said unto her [the woman at the well of Jacob], Every one that drinketh of this water shall thirst again: 14 but whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall become in him a well of water springing up unto eternal life. 15 The woman saith unto him, Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come all the way hither to draw.

The faith of Christ is an assurance of things hoped for and a conviction of things not seen, as the scripture declares (Heb 11:1). This faith works as a contrast to all natural and worldly reasoning and inclinations. Even in type the faith of Abraham helped him to hope against hope that God will fulfil His promise to give them an offspring through Sarah which will be in number like the stars in the heaven (Rom 4:17-22; Gen 15:5-6). In this sense Abraham represents the Old Testament example of the Christ as the Saviour through whom the “great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues” will be saved (1Cor 15:22-28; 1Tim 4:10; Rev 7:9):

Gal 3:8 And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed.

God created the generation of the fleshly Adam to be given an evil experience first and afterward He will conform all in that Adam into the spiritual image of His Son, Jesus Christ, through a lengthy spiritual judgement process (Gen 2:7; Gen 3:19; Jer 18:4; Rom 8:20):

Ecc 1:13 CLV I applied my heart to inquiring and exploring by wisdom concerning all that is done under the heavens: it is an experience of evil Elohim has given to the sons of humanity to humble them by it.

1Co 15:45-46 And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit. 46 Howbeit that was not first which is spiritual, but that which is natural; and afterward that which is spiritual.

In our discussion on the foundational theme of faith, we come to Chapter 19 of Genesis where the focus is placed on Lot, the nephew of Abraham, and the ultimate judgement of God on the city where he and his family live, namely Sodom. Lot moved with Abraham from Ur in the Chaldees to Canaan. In this whole process he also, like Abraham, became rich in goods, even after their stay in Egypt, which caused them to split because of the limited pasturage and water holes:

Gen 13:8-9 And Abram said unto Lot, Let there be no strife, I pray thee, between me and thee, and between my herdmen and thy herdmen; for we be brethren. 9 Is not the whole land before thee? separate thyself, I pray thee, from me: if thou wilt take the left hand, then I will go to the right; or if thou depart to the right hand, then I will go to the left.

We are discussing the foundational theme of faith as it is typified in the life of Abraham. As we develop spiritually through the faith of Christ working in us, the communication with God, especially our prayers, also grows in maturity. Prayer is basically a two-way communication with God which He works in totality – He always initiates prayer and also brings His conclusion or answer to that prayer according to His will (Mat 6:10; Jas 4:15; 1Jn 5:14):

It is through these written records that we learn how to be patient within this whole salvation process and to know that we are not the first or the only ones going through this. As the faith of Christ grows in us our hope also strengthens as we learn progressively how to inherit the promised land, which is the spirit life of God, the Father through His Son, Jesus Christ (Joh 17:3; 1Cor 13:13):

Our natural mind is made to be ruled by spiritual darkness by God’s design and purpose, and we are naturally destitute of the wisdom of God (Psa 69:5; John 1:5; 1Co 1:20; Jer 17:9). God created the darkness first in us before He brings the Light (Gen 1:2-4; Isa 45:7; Jer 18:4; Rom 8:20; 2Pe 1:19). In this darkened state of mind we joyfully follow our own foolish counsel, also referred to as the “wisdom of this world” (Pro 12:23; 1Co 1:20; 1Co 2:6; 1Co 3:19):

Gen 1:26 And God said, Let us make [Hebrew imperfect tense of this verb is pointing to an action which is incomplete] man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

Foundational themes in Genesis – Study 58 (Key verses: Gen 15:1-6)

This is our sixth discussion relating to the foundational theme of faith, as we are focussing specifically on the life and journeys of Abram (only later called Abraham). The faith that Abram displayed from his initial calling in Ur in the land of the Chaldees is a type of the faith of Jesus Christ which we receive to please God and to gain access to his spirit and his mind (Rom 4:1-12; Heb 11:6; Mar 11:20-26). Through the faith and life of Christ in us we are given guarantees through His word that we will be overcomers and be faithful until the end (1Tim 6:12; 1John 5:4; Heb 12:2; Gen 15:1):

Rom 4:16-17 Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all. 17 (As it is written, I have made thee a father of many nations,) before him whom he believed, even God, who quickeneth the dead, and calleth those things which be not as though they were.

This is the fifth part in our discussion on the foundational theme of faith. We learn so much of what the faith of Christ is about through what has been written and typified in the life and journeys of Abram (only later called Abraham). The faith of Abram typified this faith of Jesus as Abram obeyed God without question or murmur and left his city of Ur in the land of the Chaldees to be a sojourner and stranger in the land of the Canaanite (Acts 7:1-5). Abram was looking for a city whose builder and maker is God, but that spiritual city is only reserved for those who can receive the promises of the faith of Christ, which Abram and all others in the Old Testament “not having received the promises” (Heb 11:8-10; Heb 11:4-13):

Heb 11:13 These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.

In the fourth part of our discussions on the foundational theme of faith we will touch on another important aspect of the gift of the faith of Christ and its development and application in us (Eph 2:2-9; Php 3:9). The faith of Christ comes through many examples and types in the Old Testament although all of them “died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off” (Heb 11). But through the life and journeys of Abraham, the faith of this man is given by God as the prime example for us to learn from (Rom 1:20). From his initial city of Ur in the Chaldees to the cave of Machpelah in Canaan, Abraham’s life is “written for our learning” and we truly live by these words in our appointed time (Gen 11:26Gen 25:10; 1Cor 10:11; Rom 15:4; Matt 4:4):

Rom 4:16 Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all.

God’s revelation of Jesus starts off with the unveiling of our old man or the things in the natural and their purpose in the plan of God (Rev 1:1; 2Thes 2:1-5). Although the natural things are just the total opposite of the spiritual things of God, it is through the spiritually dead things that we are firstly introduced to the invisible spiritual things of God as we live by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God (1Co 15:45-46; Matt 4:4):

Rev 1:17 And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the first and the last.

We all descended from Adam through the three sons of Noah whose offspring were distributed and separated by God according to diverse languages after the global flood (Gen 9:1; Gen 10:5; Gen 11:1-9). The first eleven chapters of Genesis prepare us for what the rest of the Scriptures will focus on. From chapter 12 of Genesis and for the next fourteen chapters the Bible brings one man and his generation into our focus, namely Abraham and his family. Through Shem, the one son of Noah, Abraham is the person whom God will use to introduce the vital aspect of faith in our spiritual life which will be the theme of our discussions for the next few weeks, God willing:

Foundational themes in Genesis – Study 52 (Key verses: Gen 11:1-9)

Genesis 11 is a very significant chapter in the Bible because it highlights once more the one and only division with which the elect of God is concerned – that of the division of darkness and light (Gen 1:1-5; John 1:1-14). This division contrasts two totally opposing mind-sets that God has instituted by which all in the first Adam will also live by (Matt 4:4). The first nine verses of the chapter summarise the fatal flaws and marred condition of the mind of our natural man which relates to the darkness God created (Isa 45:7; Jer 18:4). This is the ‘world order’ under which all mankind are subjected to, even “by reason of Him who subjected [them all] in hope” of a new spiritual ‘world order’ in Christ (Rom 8:20). The rest of Genesis chapter 11 focuses on the offspring of one of Noah’s sons, namely Shem, and sets the stage of the true new ‘world order’ of the Lord and His Christ which comes through faith and obedience to His commandments. This latter ‘order’ is what all the Scriptures focus on when those with the mind of the Lord can see God’s perfect plan for humanity typified by one man and the faith he was given. That man is Abraham, who is the type of Christ and the faith which will please the Father by which “all will be blessed” (Gen 12:1-3). Through the mind of the Lord “the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God” is unveiled in all its splendour and beauty (1Co 2:10; 1Co 2:15-16):

Rom 11:33-36 O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out! 34 For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counsellor? 35 Or who hath first given to him, and it shall be recompensed unto him again? 36 For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen.

Foundational themes in Genesis – Study 51 (Key verses: Gen 10:21-31; Gen 11:10-28; 1Chr 1:17-27)

The spiritual meaning of the number three in Scripture relates to spiritual progression to maturity. Natural life on earth is a shadow of that process because the natural reflects a parable of the spiritual (Rom 1:20; Heb 11:3). For those interested in natural things the spiritual things of God are foolishness and not worth spending much time and effort on (1Cor 2:14). The natural is indeed applicable in its own time and context, and a very important first step in us becoming in the spiritual image of God eventually (Gen 1:26; Jer 18:4; 1Cor 15:22-28).

The three sons of Noah are indeed the progenitors of all people living on the earth today and the Scriptures are clear about that (Gen 6:7-10; Gen 9:1). But these three sons of Noah and their offspring also represent our own growth process to fill and rule the whole earth, meaning we are to overcome every evil in our own lives by the indwelling Christ – and that is a lifelong war (Isa 45:7; Rom 8:20; 1John 2:16; Rev 17:14; Rev 12:10-11). God’s covenant after the flood also conveys His commitment with all flesh through these three sons of Noah that all in the first Adam will be made new through a work of grace by the spirit of God in Christ (Gen 9:9-17; 1Cor 15:22-28; Tit 2:11-12; 1Cor 3:13-15). Noah’s prophecy regarding his sons is also very insightful as through those words the continual interrelatedness between these sons and their offspring are indicative, even as they typify our own inward spiritual realms:

Gen 9:24-27 And Noah awoke from his wine, and knew what his younger son [Ham] had done unto him. 25 And he said, Cursed be Canaan; a servant of servants shall he be unto his brethren. 26 And he said, Blessed be the LORD God of Shem; and Canaan shall be his servant. 27 God shall enlarge Japheth, and he shall dwell in the tents of Shem; and Canaan shall be his servant.

Foundational themes in Genesis – Study 49 (Key verses: Genesis 9:28-29 Gen 10:1-5)

The flesh and its carnal spirit in man is the enemy of the spirit of God and naturally we reject spiritual things, even the very truth of God (Rom 8:5-8; 2Thes 2:2-10-12; John 14:17; 1Cor 2:14). Spirit life is the extreme opposite to what physical life entails and the natural man cannot even properly understand or control his own physical environment, neither his own mental state, nor anything to do with “earthy things” (John 3:6, 12; Gal 5:17). The things of the spirit of God are therefore impossible to receive by the natural man – it is all foolishness to his puffed up mind:

1Co 2:14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

Foundational themes in Genesis – Study 48 (Key verses: Gen 9:20-27)

We have seen in our last discussion that the three main family lines of all physical nations on earth today came forth from the three sons of Noah as they all form part of one family or generation in the first man Adam (Gen 9:1; Act 17:26). The three sons of Noah and their offspring were given diverse attributes which sadly lead to much raging about vain things which actually all unite them to “take counsel together against the Lord and against His anointed” (Ps 2:1-2; 1Cor 15:45-50; Gal 5:17; John 3:6; 1Co 6:17; Eph 2:18; Eph 4:4). The flesh is of one mind which is a type of the one mind of the spirit of God, but the two minds are in total opposition to each other (Rom 1:20; John 3:6; Gal 5:17; Amos 3:3; 2Cor 6:14). The flesh and all its nations supply the all-important resistance and persecution to the spiritual elect of God. Like the physical nation of Israel in type, all God’s spiritual elect must first be delivered from their immature journeys in the wilderness (of murmurings and contentions against God) to finally face spiritual warfare in the promised land (Ex 13:17-18; Deu 8:2-3):

Jdg 3:1-2 Now these are the nations which the LORD left, to prove Israel by them, even as many of Israel as had not known all the wars of Canaan; 2 Only that the generations of the children of Israel might know, to teach them war, at the least such as before knew nothing thereof.

The foundational theme of covenants which we find in the book of Genesis helps us to understand important spiritual aspects which forms an integral part of the one “everlasting covenant” of God with all mankind through Christ (Rom 1:20; 1Cor 15:22-28; Heb 8:6-7; Heb 13:20-21). The Hebrew and Greek words for covenant which are “berı̂yth” (meaning: to cut) and “diathēkē” (meaning: to set out or making arrangements for possessions after death) respectively is very significant to further deepen our understanding relating to some of the aspects we briefly covered already, which included:

• the cutting of flesh (typified by the killing of animals during covenant making as it points to a separation from our own flesh and carnal thinking);

• the cataclysmic changes or metamorphosis covenants bring about (bringing about the new spirit life through fiery judgements in us);

• the promise of blessing in the covenants within the spiritual restitution of all in Adam to be in Christ;

• the commandments connected to covenants which can only be obeyed with the indwelling Christ – the hope of glory.

(ref. 2Cor 3:18; Rom 12:2; Gen 9:1; Gen 17:5-8; Matt 6:31-34; Act 3:19-21; 2Cor 2:14; Heb 8:6; Heb 10:34; Heb 11:16; Heb 11:40; Heb 12:24; Gal 5:22).

In the covenant which God made with Noah we see that this covenant applies to all in the first Adam via Noah’s generations, no matter the “bounds of their habitation” (Act 17:26):

Gen 9:9 And I, behold, I establish my covenant with you [Noah], and with your seed after you.

Genesis Study 044 – Key verses: Gen 9:9-11; 17:5-8

Foundational themes in Genesis – Study 44 (Key verses: Gen 9:9-11; Gen 17:5-8)

We are continuing with the theme of covenants as they appear in the Scriptures which all help us to understand a few important spiritual aspects involved in this theme. All these aspects are included in the one “everlasting covenant” of God to make all in Adam spiritually perfect in Christ. (Rom 1:20; Eph 2:11-12; Heb 8:6-7; Heb 13:20-21). Some of the aspects we briefly covered included the cutting of flesh (typified by the killing of animals during covenant making) and the cataclysmic changes or metamorphosis covenants bring about (2Cor 3:18; Rom 12:2). The first time the word “covenant” appears in Scripture is in relation to the flood in Noah’s days where things on the earth were changed to usher in a brand new world for the eight people who were inside the ark. That flood was used by God as a type to show us how the spiritual or everlasting covenant will be applicable through the death of the first man Adam in all of us (Rom 6:3-11; Heb 13:20; Gal 2:20).

1Pe 3:20-22 Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water. 21 The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ: 22 Who is gone into heaven, and is on the right hand of God; angels and authorities and powers being made subject unto him.

Foundational themes in Genesis – Study 43 (Key verses: Gen 6:17-22; Gen 8:20-22; Gen 9:9-11; Gen 15:9-17)

We will continue with the theme of covenants in Scripture after our discussion last week where certain aspects pertaining to covenants were covered. We already established that all physical covenants mentioned in the Scriptures are types of the new spiritual or everlasting covenant (Heb 13:20-21; Heb 10:1; Jer 31:31-33; Deu 4:13). These various aspects within the numerous covenants mentioned in the Old Testament all help to increase our understanding of the one true everlasting covenant God made with Himself through Christ Jesus before the foundation of the world concerning the salvation process of all in the first man Adam (Gen 26:28-29; Gen 31:50-52; Ex 23:32; 1Sam 11:1-2; 1Sa 18:3; 1Ki 15:18,19; 1Ki 20:34; Pro 2:17; Mal 2:14; Eph 2:11-12; Heb 8:6-7; Heb 13:20-21). The temporary physical things indeed helps us to understand the eternal and invisible things of God although the physical is also the total opposite to what the spiritual is all about (Rom 1:20; John 1:17; Gal 5:17; Deu 9:9-11; Heb 8:6; Heb 9:4; Php 1:10; 2Cor 5:17; Mat 24:35). A shadow is indeed dark and cannot display the detail and full splendour of the object it represents (Heb 8:5-13; Col 2:17). One important aspect of covenants we discussed last week was that covenants involved the sacrificing of animals and the cutting of flesh. This relates not only to the roles and commitment of the different parties involved in a covenant, but also to the total destruction of “the world of the ungodly” in our own flesh and its carnal mind to obtain the spiritual things of God (1John 2:16; 2Pet 3:7-10; Matt 10:28):

2Pe 2:5 And spared not the old world, but saved Noah the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood [Greek: “kataklusmos”] upon the world of the ungodly.

Foundational themes in Genesis – Study 42 (Key verses: Gen 8:20-22; Gen 9:1-17; Gen 15:9-17) The theme of God making a covenant with humanity is central to all that God is doing in and through the generation of the first man Adam. Covenants appear throughout the Scriptures which all combine to give us very important aspects involved in this foundational theme. All physical covenants which we find in the Old Testament help us to understand God’s one spiritual and “everlasting covenant” to make all in Adam spiritually perfect in Christ (Rom 1:20; Eph 2:11-12). The new covenant is the one true covenant and it is more excellent and much more glorious because God has promised that He will indeed make all things, all in the generation of the first Adam, new in spirit through Christ Jesus (Jer 31:31-33; Deu 4:13; Deu 9:9-11; Heb 8:6; Heb 9:4; Php 1:10; 2Cor 5:17). The old (in all its various details, including the ten commandments) is indeed just a shadow and the exact opposite of the new and is used by God as a “schoolmaster” to bring us to the “the good things to come” (John 1:17; Heb 10:1; Gal 3:23-25; Gal 5:17).

Heb 13:20-21 Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting [Greek: “aiōnios” = age binding] covenant, 21 Make you perfect in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is wellpleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

Foundational themes in Genesis – Study 41 (Key verses: Gen 8:1-19)

The natural mind in the generation of the first Adam was made by God to focus on natural things, and God deludes the carnal mind to think he has a “free” will by which man determines the means of survival within the physical environment, independent from God (Gen 2:7; Matt 16:23; 2Thes 2:11; 1Cor 1:20; 1Co 2:14; Jas 3:15).

Foundational themes in Genesis – Study 40 (Key verses: Gen 7:6-24)

The global flood in “the days of Noah” helps us to understand how God lifts and strengthens us through the very things He takes away from us through judgement (Isa 9:6-7; Isa 2:2-4; Dan 2:34-35; 2Thes 1:3-5; Php 1:28).
The theme of spiritual elevation or spiritual growth is foundational to our understanding of the dynamics involved in the process of salvation for all in the generation of the first man Adam (1Cor 15:22-28; Php 2:9-11; Col 1:15-20; Php 1:6; Eph 1:10).
This very important historic event of the flood typifies God’s spiritual judgement in “the days of…the coming of the Son of man” when everyone in Adam will learn that His righteousness will be established in all (Mat 24:37-39; Luk 17:26-27; 1Pet 3:20; Isa 26:9; 1Cor 10:11; 1Cor 4:6).
The waters in Noah’s day also typify the cleansing fire of God’s wrath on the old man, the first Adam in all.
It points to the one baptism through which spiritual life comes to all who sleeps and are dead in the generation of the first Adam, as all in Adam are appointed to obtain a spiritual awakening to live in Christ (Ecc 9:2; Eph 5:26; Rom 6:3-4):

Eph 4:5-6 One Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.

Foundational themes in Genesis – Study 39 (Key verses: Gen 6:17-22; Gen 7:1-5)

God is working his perfect one plan of salvation of all within two generational lines which is a natural Adam first, and “afterward” all in that natural man will be made new in the spirit man, Jesus Christ (1Cor 15:22-28; 1Cor 15:45-50). Right in the beginning of the book of Genesis (the Greek word for generations) these two lines are established being the two opposing sides of the darkness (which refer to all carnality and physical things), and the light, which is God’s spirit or eternal things (Gen 1:1-5; Isa 45:7; Gen 3:15; John 3:6; Gal 2:3; 2Ti 2:20):

Gal 5:17 For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh. And these are contrary to one another; lest whatever you may will, these things you do.

Gal 4:29 But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was born after the Spirit, even so it is now.

Act 17:27-28 That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us: 28 For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.

All in the first Adam was made subject to vanity and all flesh is still completely under the process of corruption in the hand of the Potter. This is the physical and spiritual state of the first “vessel…to dishonour… [and] of wrath…fitted to destruction”, by God’s design (Rom 9:21-22):

Jer 18:4 And the vessel that he made of clay [“dust” / “out of the earth” / “earthy”] was marred [Hebrew: “shâchath” = ruin] in the hand of the potter: so he made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it.

The theme of the sons of God is central and foundational in Scriptures as God progressively channels the focus to His elect. It is through this elect that He is going to bring forth all in the first man Adam to be conformed to the spiritual image of the last Adam, even Jesus Christ (Rom 8:29; 1Cor 15:45-49). But within this whole process God works and uses all things and every moment to fulfil that one purpose (Eph 1:11). Everything God created is functional and purposeful as they have a “very good” purpose, even if it is just temporal in this regard:

Gen 1:31a And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good.

Foundational themes in Genesis – Study 35 (Key verses: Genesis 6:1-7)

The theme of generations runs throughout this book of beginnings or origins, namely Genesis. “Genesis” is a Greek word for “generation” or “origin” and the equivalent Hebrew word “tôledâh” appears 13 times in Genesis alone (Gen 2:4, Gen 5:1, Gen 6:9 (2), Gen 10:1, Gen 10:32, Gen 11:10, Gen 11:27, Gen 25:12-13 (2), Gen 25:19, Gen 36:1, Gen 36:9, Gen 37:2). But God also made clear distinctions between the generations which basically fall into two lines which brings one of the main themes of all Scripture into focus:

Gen 3:15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

Foundational themes in Genesis – Study 34 (Key verses: Gen 4:25-26; Gen 5:1-32)

The generation of the first fleshly Adam is a shadow of the true generation whom God is going to bring forth in the last Adam, Jesus Christ (Matt 19:30). The flesh and all outward things also serve as an adversary or opposition to our spiritual development and refinement – until all fleshly things will finally pass away (Col 2:16-17; Heb 8:5; Heb 10:1; Matt 4:16; Gal 5:17; Isa 48:10; Zec 13:9). These spiritual principals are given to us right in the beginning in the book of Genesis. The first earthy Adam is therefore an essential part of the revelation of Jesus (1Co 15:45-47):

Mat 24:35 Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.

The natural is our first experience of life, and through this natural we learn so much about God’s spiritual works in the generation of the first Adam (1Co 15:46; Rom 1:20). However everything in the physical is just a shadow of the spiritual, meaning God is using the physical as a contrast and opposition to the spirit of God (Col 2:16-17; Heb 8:5; Heb 10:1; Matt 4:16):

Gal 5:17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.

Foundational themes in Genesis – Study 32 (Key verses: Gen 4:8-16; Lev 17:11)

The theme of blood is foundational to our understanding of the work of Christ in the generation of the first Adam. The Bible has been called “the book of blood” because of this particular theme running right through it. Killings and shedding of blood make the Scriptures unattractive to the natural man who always selfishly wants to survive as long as possible. But the natural blood given to the first man Adam is but a type of the real spiritual blood which the last Adam, Jesus Christ, will give to all eventually. The first man Adam and all in his generation are from the ground and all given the same earthy blood or carnal “breath of life”:

Gen 2:7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

It is through the natural (or “the first”) that we can understand and be “seated” in the invisible spiritual things of God (Eph 2:6; Col 2:12; Eph 1:3):

The visible things which God created in the natural world, including “our days on the earth”, are temporary “shadows” as we walk as strangers (flesh) before God (spirit) in “the valley of the shadow of death” being “bound in affliction and iron” – all ordained by God (Rom 1:20; Ps 107:10; Isa 9:2; Amos 5:8):

Psa 23:4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

Foundational themes in Genesis – Study 24 (Key verses: Genesis 3:8-9)

Gen 3:8-9 And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves [Hebrew: “châbâ”] from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden. 9 And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?

The words “hid themselves” in verse 8 here comes from the Hebrew word “châbâ” and it has to do with secrecy or to withdraw oneself in order to protect oneself. The word “châbâ” comes from “châbab” which means to cherish or love fervently. This is when we get wrapped up by our own natural way of thinking which of course will be shown as futility and inadequate which was outwardly manifested in the covering Adam and Eve made for themselves (Gen 3:7). We know that God knew exactly where Adam and Eve were and what they had done. So the question “where art thou?” is written from the perspective of the natural mind of the first Adam when we cannot see that God knows and causes all things and He is not far from anyone at any stage (Eph 1:11: Ps 139:1-16):

Act 17:27-28 That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us: 28 For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.

But God sees our righteousness as filthy and stinking rags:

God has not given it to the natural man to understand or accept that He is causing or working all things, the good and the evil, in His creation and that He is righteous in all of this (1 Cor2:14;Rom 9:19-21). Spiritual blindness is indeed a work of God (Psa 107:8;1 Cor 1:27-29;1 Cor 2:7; Rom 11:25; Col 1:26):

Isa 29:14-16 Therefore, behold, I will proceed to do a marvellous work among this people, even a marvellous work and a wonder: for the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the understanding of their prudent men shall be hid. 15 Woe unto them that seek deep to hide their counsel from the LORD, and their works are in the dark, and they say, Who seeth us? and who knoweth us? 16 Surely your turning of things upside down shall be esteemed as the potter’s clay: for shall the work say of him that made it, He made me not? or shall the thing framed say of him that framed it, He had no understanding?

He also created evil and darkness which is “all that is in the world” of the first Adam (Gen 1:2: Matt 4:16; Matt 6:23):

The theme of temptation is very closely linked to our previous theme and discussion on the role of this subtle serpent (or evil) in God’s plan. Temptation is an important spiritual instrument which God is using since the beginning to make all in the generation of the first man Adam in His spiritual image:

Gen 1:27 CLV And creating is the Elohim humanity in His image. In the image of the Elohim He creates it. Male and female He creates them.

Foundational themes in Genesis – study 17 (Key verses: Genesis 1:16; 3:1-5)
The theme of a serpent is foundational in our understanding of God’s works in “the book of the generations” of the first Adam (Gen 1:1; 2:4; 5:1). The first time this theme is directly addressed is in Genesis 3:

Gen 3:1 Now the serpent [Hebrew: “nâchâsh”] was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?

Foundational themes in Genesis – study 16 (Key verses: Genesis 3:1-5)

In our last discussion we started with the theme of Satan, a spirit being who was first introduced to Adam and Eve as a serpent. He was created by God to be “more subtle than any beast of the field” (Gen 3:1; Isa 45:7; Pro 16:4). We touched on a few of his characteristics, especially how he intimately relates to the natural mind and heart in the generation of the first man Adam (Rom 8:6; Jer 17:9). This subtle serpent was the first animal which God brought to the close attention of Adam and Eve before they had eaten of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. At that stage they had no discernment to determine whether this serpent had good or evil intentions. They were not given the necessary armour to “stand against the wiles” of this “old serpent” or “devil” (Rev 12:9):

Eph 6:11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles [Greek: “methodeia” – cunningness, trickery, deceit, craftiness] of the devil.

Foundational themes in Genesis – study 15 (Key verse: Genesis 3:1)

The book of Genesis is the book of the first things or beginnings as far as the generation of the first man Adam is concerned. If we cannot see God’s work “from the beginning” in the true light, the Word of God will remain dark sayings (John 8:25; Rev 21:6; Ps 78:2). In our previous two studies we saw how the plant life which was created by God on the third day helps us to appreciate God as the spiritual husbandman working both the evil and good fruit in His garden, even in the generations of the first man Adam. In today’s study we will briefly discuss the other part of God’s creation – the animal life. God created all things for His purpose and that also includes the animal world. But the visible things are all types and shadows of things that “do not appear” – these are spiritual realities (Rom 1:20; Heb 11:3). One particular animal’s character and modus operandi is brought to our attention in Genesis 3:

Gen 3:1 Now the serpent was more subtil [subtle] than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?

Foundational themes in Genesis – study 14 (Key verse: Genesis 2:17)

Last week we saw how the theme of a garden is assisting our understanding of God’s works in the generations of the first man Adam to make him (and all in him) in the image of God, even Jesus Christ (1Cor 15:22; Rom 8:29). God is working in His garden in the generations of the first Adam so that all of them will eventually bear “the fruits of righteousness…by Jesus Christ” at their appointed time (John 5:17-18):

Php 1:11 Being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are by Jesus Christ, unto the glory and praise of God.

Foundational themes in Genesis – study 13 (Key verse: Genesis 2:5-8, 15)

Earthy man was formed from the same ground as all the other things of the earth which was needed for the first man Adam. Adam and Eve were placed in a garden by God and the theme of a garden runs throughout the Scriptures:

Gen 2:5-8 and verse 15 And every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew: for the LORD God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was not a man to till the ground. 6 But there went up a mist from the earth, and watered the whole face of the ground. 7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. 8 And the LORD God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed. 15 And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden (Hebrew: “gan” – a protected enclosure; hedged in) of Eden to dress it and to keep it.

Jesus Christ was appointed by God, the Father, to be the Creator and God of this physical universe:

Joh 1:1-5 and Joh 1:14 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men. 5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. 14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

Foundational themes in Genesis: Study 5

In the book of Genesis God gives very important foundational themes on which the whole revelation of Jesus is built.
We must never think that there is no physical application in the Scriptures, but that is not the focus of the spiritual mind of Christ.

The visible things are spiritual types by which we come to an understanding of the invisible things of God (Rom 1:20), but it is only through the gift of faith we can get revelation of what these things mean to ourselves and how they apply within our lives.
The focus is therefore not the acquisition of knowledge, but how that knowledge brings spiritual understanding and wisdom which is applicable in our lives in relation to God’s purposes for us and others.

If the creation story in Genesis 1 and 2 is only speaking of God as the creator of physical things applying to this planet and our physical life, then we have not been given eyes to see beyond the fleshly veil:

The book of Genesis: Study 3

The title of this book “Genesis” is from the Greek word “genesis” (Hebrew “tôledâh”) which is translated as “generations” in several verses in Genesis (ref. Gen. 2:4; Gen. 5:1; Gen. 6:9; Gen. 10:1; Gen. 10:32; Gen. 11:10; Gen. 11:27; Gen. 25:12; Gen. 25:19; Gen. 36:1; Gen. 37:2).
We are concentrating on various themes in our study in the book of Genesis and last week we touched on the most important theme in the scriptures, namely the Godhead. In Genesis the relationship in the Godhead between God, the Father, and His Son, Jesus Christ, proves that there was no trinity “from the beginning”. The general theme of “genesis” or “generations” is intimately tied to the theme of relationships, as the Godhead demonstrates.

We will discuss the theme of “generations” in today’s study. Everything that exists in this creation is of God, the Father, through or by the Lord Jesus, which includes ‘the book of the generations of Adam’:

The Hebrew name for the book is “bereshith”, the first word in the Hebrew text, which is translated in English as “in the beginning”

This is a study on the Book of 1st Corinthians. This book was written by the Apostle Paul for a number of reasons. First of all, Paul got word from some people in Corinth that there were issues which needed to be addressed. He covers this in chapters 1-6 including: contentions/division, fornication, and lawsuits among believers. Chapters 7-16 are a response to questions that the Corinthians wrote to Paul about.

  • Chapters 1-6: Contentions/division, fornication, and lawsuits among believers
  • Chapter 7: Marriage
  • Chapter 8: Things offered to idols
  • Chapter 9: Rights and conduct of an Apostle
  • Chapter 10: Warnings from Israel’s history/ The Lord’s supper
