A Diligent Inquisition

Part 1

Georgia Conference 2014
December 29th and 30th

Ezra 7:23 (KJV)
” 23 Whatsoever is commanded by the God of heaven, let it be diligently done for the house of the God of heaven: for why should there be wrath against the realm of the king and his sons?”

Deuteronomy 19:18-19 (KJV)
” 18 And the judges shall make diligent inquisition: and, behold, if the witness be a false witness, and hath testified falsely against his brother;
19 Then shall ye do unto him, as he had thought to have done unto his brother: so shalt thou put the evil away from among you.”

The faith of Jesus Christ is a precious gift that is given to a few out of the many called followers of Jesus.

Matthew 22:14 (KJV)
” For many are called, but few are chosen.”

This faith is an incremental, “little by little”, “here a little”, “there a little” (Exodus 28: 30, Isaiah 28:10-13 KJV) addition that God plants.
It works to continually engage our mind and hearts in all aspects of life.

One of the crucial aspects of the faith is the continual demand to be diligent in our walk.

Psalms 119:4 (KJV)
” 4 Thou hast commanded us to keep thy precepts [=WALK] diligently.”

Galatians 5:22-25 (KJV)
“22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
24 And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.
25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk [diligently] in the Spirit.”

FAITH is a prerequisite to pleasing God, and it continues to grow from a planted seed of faith, (a godly gift) to a progressive mature fruit of the Spirit.

Hebrews 11:6 (KJV)
” 6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that [diligently] seek him.”

Before we go on to explore the deeper spiritual application of diligent inquisitions, we must first remind ourselves what the English word “diligent” means, then how this links with the process of inquisitions the Scripture speaks of.

Diligence 1
—noun ; constant and earnest effort to accomplish what is undertaken; persistent exertion of body or mind.

Law. The degree of care and caution required by the circumstances of a person.

Obsolete. Care; caution.

Exodus 15:26 (KJV)
” 26 And said, If thou wilt diligently [Heb: Shama] hearken to the voice of the Lord thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the Lord that healeth thee.”

Hebrew 8085-DILIGENTLY

A primitive root; to hear intelligently (often with implication of attention, obedience, etc.; causatively to tell, etc.):– X attentively, call (gather) together, X carefully, X certainly, consent, consider, be content, declare, X diligently, discern, give ear, (cause to, let, make to) hear (-ken, tell), X indeed, listen, make (a) noise, (be) obedient, obey, perceive, (make a) proclaim (-ation), publish, regard, report, shew (forth), (make a) sound, X surely, tell, understand, whosoever [heareth], witness.

One of the main things to bear in mind when the Scripture speaks of diligent / diligence is ‘constant and earnest effort’, ‘implication of attention’ regarding what is being searched for or discussed.
It is the perseverance in carrying out an action. So we will be marrying the spiritual meaning with walking in the Spirit, an ACTION.

Being diligent is an action that must be continually proved. As with all actions, this can be towards a positive outcome or a negative end.

2 Corinthians 8:22 (KJV)
“22 And we have sent with them our brother, whom we have oftentimes proved diligent in many things, but now much more diligent, upon the great confidence which I have in you.”

The opposite of all this is lethargy, laziness/idleness, and slothfulness in the things of the Spirit.

Laying down these simple meaning of the word, let us now focus more on the examples that we are given in Scripture we will all fulfill in our appointed times.

We must bear in mind also the principle that not that which is spiritual is first, but that which is natural.

1 Corinthians 15:46 (KJV)
“46 Howbeit that was not first which is spiritual, but that which is natural; and afterward that which is spiritual.”

That is another way of saying our efforts to be diligent are first carnally minded, rooted in death, and afterward, when true faith is come, we are caused to be more and more diligent in the narrow way of the Lord, the way of life that is not according to ‘men’.

Jeremiah 21:8 (KJV)
“8 And unto this people thou shalt say, Thus saith the Lord; Behold, I set before you the way of life, and the way of death.”

Proverbs 14:12 (also Proverbs 16:25 ) KJV
” 12 There is a way which seemeth right unto a man,
but the end thereof are the ways of death.”

That “ways of death” is the ways of the “great harlot”, “the strange woman”, her ways of seeing and living that many are trapped/snared in.

Proverbs 7:27 (KJV)
27 Her house is the way to hell, [Hebrew: Sheol] going down to the chambers of death.

Just as the days of old, many diligent inquisitions are still being made by the kings and priests of this world to put to death the KING OF THE JEWS, Christ Jesus.

Matthew 2:1-9 (KJV)
” 1 Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem,
2 Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.
3 When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.
4 And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born.
5 And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judaea: for thus it is written by the prophet,
6 And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel.
7 Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, enquired of them diligently what time the star appeared.
8 And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also.
9 When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was.”

The birth of Jesus Christ in us is the birth of the knowledge, wisdom and righteousness of God (Truth in the inward parts of the heart), the New Man. This will always lead to some men seeking and inquiring of this New Way, some sincerely, some craftily to the end that the child is destroyed.

1 Corinth 1: 30 (KJV)
But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption:

Psalms 51:6 (KJV)
” 6 Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom.”

Though they do not know what they are doing in the grand scheme of God’s plan, the spirit that is manifested in some is as a roaring lion, walking about as an adversary diligently seeking means of putting to death this knowledge, truth, wisdom, righteousness and godliness that is “Christ in you, …the hope of glory”. (Colossians 1:27)

“That I may come and worship him also” as said by King Herod is a deceptive statement, which was the reason given for the diligent inquisition in the first place. It is a wile of the devil we must not be ignorant of.
A smooth saying, fair speech that has deadly hidden intentions that could lead some to lower their guard (vigilance), not knowing they are being diligently sought into the chambers of death by the subtil heart of an harlot.

Proverbs 7:15 Therefore came I forth to meet thee, diligently to seek thy face, and I have found thee.

Proverbs 7:21 With her much fair speech she caused him to yield, with the flattering of her lips she forced him. 22 He goeth after her straightway, as an ox goeth to the slaughter, or as a fool to the correction of the stocks; 23 Till a dart strike through his liver; as a bird hasteth to the snare, and knoweth not that it is for his life.

Those few Christ raised and is still bringing from the dead are not exempt from this.

John 11:53 (KJV)
Then from that day forth they took counsel together for to put him to death.

John 12:9-10 (KJV) Much people of the Jews therefore knew that he was there: and they came not for Jesus’ sake only, but that they might see Lazarus also, whom he had raised from the dead.
10 But the chief priests consulted that they might put Lazarus also to death;

“From that day forth” did not end when Christ was physically crucified.
Saul of Tarsus spent a considerable amount of energy doing what he thought he ought to do contrary to the name of Jesus, taking counsel against the Lord and His Christ. We must be watchful and recognize that as it was then, so it is these days.

Acts 26-9-11 (KJV) I verily thought with myself, that I ought to do many things contrary to the name of Jesus of Nazareth.
10 Which thing I also did in Jerusalem: and many of the saints did I shut up in prison, having received authority from the chief priests; and when they were put to death, I gave my voice against them.
11 And I punished them oft in every synagogue, and compelled them to blaspheme; and being exceedingly mad against them, I persecuted them even unto strange cities.

How diligent and serious must Saul have been searching for believers, inquiring who the saints are and finding them, making plans, compelling Christians, altogether to have Christ killed?

In time, that diligence will be positively channeled to a godly cause.

That same spirit was in old King Herod before the days of Saul, “diligently” seeking for the young child. Searching for the growing child Jesus to kill the threat of reformation posed, the threat of new rulership and government that will have him deposed.

Matthew 2:7 Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, enquired of them diligently what time the star appeared.

1 Peter 5:8-9 (KJV)
“8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, […diligently…] seeking whom he may devour:
9 Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.”

In contrast to the evil spirit of the world that works diligently to seek and devour Christ growing in us, the Spirit of Christ in our heart works to “the salvation of the souls”, establishing Christ in the mind and hearts of those He is choosing.

1 Peter 1:9-11 (KJV)
” 9 Receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls.
10 Of which salvation the prophets have enquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you:
11 [diligently] Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow.”

The way unto salvation was heard of in the old times, even today, but no man, (not even the Old Testament prophets) knew that Way.
Though many today are diligently seeking this Way, some sincerely and genuinely, others of contention and variance, but all having one thing in common, that is, the gift and fruit of faith is NOT given or revealed to them.

1 Peter 1:12 (American Standard Version – ASV)
” 12 To whom it was revealed, that not unto themselves, but unto you, did they minister these things, which now have been announced unto you through them that preached the gospel unto you by the Holy Spirit sent forth from heaven; which things angels desire to look into.”

Like Esau, many make diligent and careful inquisitions, many study after studies, ever learning and many hours seeking Him, carrying out many wonderful works of the Law, but are denied that precious faith, that gift, that fruit of the Spirit.

It is given nevertheless “unto you”, “us”.

“You” and “us” are inclusive of anyone having the faith of God’s elect, the wholesome truth of God, the doctrine of Christ in the Sum of God’s word.

Hebrews 12:17 (KJV)
” 17 For ye know how that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected: for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it CAREFULLY with tears.”

Inspecting “carefully” a little closer…. we see this;

Greek 1567 – CAREFULLY

from 1537 and 2212; to search out, i.e. (figuratively)investigate, crave, demand, (by Hebraism) worship:–en- (re-)quire, seek after (carefully, diligently).

When I started thinking of this study, my mind was more focused on covering the scriptural aspects of making a diligent inquisition unto the salvation of the soul, and how it connects to our faith.

But as I began meditating upon it and rightly dividing the Word, it became apparent that making a diligent inquisition was not something bestowed only upon the saints of the Most High.

There are some who are given this task to diligently search for salvation but are not given to endure all things along the Way.
Some are hardened in the heart by God to become ferocious adversaries of the wholesome Truth, to become false prophets who may have once eaten and drunken with the true Jesus, but not yet given to keep enduring the Truth to the end.

Those keeping the doctrine of Christ are tasked to be diligent in the seeking of the Truth and doing of righteousness, searching out spiritual matters that comes daily to enable them to continue walking the narrow Way.

Matthew 7:13-15 (KJV)
“13 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:
14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.”
“15 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.”

Proverbs 25:2 (KJV)
” 2 It is the glory of God to conceal a thing: but the honour of kings is to search out a matter.”

The adversaries on the other side, as ravening wolves within and without, continues also to learn but all in a realm of falsehood.
They are never able to come unto the knowledge of the wholesome Truth.

2 Timothy 3:7 (KJV)
” 7 Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.”

This learning and fragmented knowledge then becomes a tool for opposition–an adversary to those that have been diligently seeking “the salvation of the souls” the word mixed with the faith of Jesus.

Hebrews 4:2 (KJV)
” 2 For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.”

**** From diligently seeking and inquiring of Christ about the issues of salvation, these arrive at a doctrine of “heaven and hell” and “eternal hell torment of sinners”, and thus are made spiritual adversaries of those who have spent much time to have the true knowledge of Christ.
For example, the knowledge of the Truth that Jesus Christ is the Saviour of all men becomes fiercely opposed.
The knowledge of the order and government in Christ becomes a stumbling block, through false and fragments of knowledge they have acquired.

1 Timothy 4:10 (KJV)
” 10 For therefore we both labour and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Saviour of all men, specially of those that believe.”

1 John 2:2 (KJV)
” 2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.”

**** From diligently seeking and enquiring about the government of Christ, these, with the spirit of Saul of Tarsus, ignorantly not knowing the Sum of the Truth, zealous for the Word, then become opposed to those that are diligent to keep God’s precept regarding order in His Church. Their much learning and inquisitions have now turned and become a great stumbling block.
Christ’s freeing us from sin (John 8:31-36) is now an excuse to no longer be diligent to set order, leading to despising of God’s government and family.

1 Corinthians 14:40 (KJV)
” 40 Let all things be done decently and in order.” Why is that again?

Ezra 7:23 (KJV)
” 23 Whatsoever is commanded by the God of heaven, let it be diligently done for the house of the God of heaven: for why should there be wrath against the realm of the king and his sons?”

1Tim 6:20 O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science [Gk: knowledge] falsely so called: 21 Which some professing have erred concerning the faith. Grace be with thee. Amen.

Many are professing “false knowledge”, and the times they have spent to acquire that knowledge further enhances their delusions and strengthen their convictions that they are of the Truth, not knowing they are in direct opposition to Christ. This mysteries of iniquities is one we must be aware of considering ourselves, examining and taking heed to our own self regularly, lest we become puffed up with knowledge, tempted and backslide into that chamber of death.

This subtil heart of the harlot within can then compel others to blaspheme and eventually will leaven the whole flock of God.
The light has now become darkness, through diligent inquisition of Christ “that I may come and worship him also”.
These are further entrapped to bondage of sin, “a land of darkness” through their idols of the heart. It is a narrow way unto life indeed.

Acts 26:9 (KJV)
” 9 I verily thought with myself, that I ought to do many things contrary to the name of Jesus of Nazareth.”

Job 10:22 (KJV)
“22 A land of darkness, as darkness itself; and of the shadow of death, without any order, and where the light is as darkness.”

Philippians 1:15-16 (KJV)
“15 Some indeed preach Christ even of envy and strife; and some also of good will:
16 The one preach Christ of contention, not sincerely, supposing to add affliction to my bonds:”

Making diligent inquisitions can be for opportunity to find ways to kill the Truth, seeking to kill Christ as in the days of King Herod.
Inquisition can be by carnal reasoning and wisdom of the world, through worldly counselors and vain philosophies whose doctrinal sum and outcome is death. We must not give space for such falsehood individually as members and collectively as a body of Christ.

Galatians 2:4 And that because of false brethren unawares brought in, who came in privily to spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus, that they might bring us into bondage. 5 To whom we gave place by subjection, no, not for an hour; that the truth of the gospel might continue with you.

The other inquisition is for the salvation of our souls, the end (outcome) of our faith.

1 Peter 1:9 (KJV)
” 9 Receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls.”

Many are still NEVER able to come to the knowledge of the truth in the above truth spoken by apostle Peter. That truth is that the beginning of our faith is NOT the time we are saved from all our sins.
Adversaries and opposition of this truth are from those holding the false knowledge of the sinner’s prayer (of a few seconds salvation).

The two ways must be clearly and explicitly separated, as light is separate from darkness.

We must ask the question, why make any diligent inquisition?

The simple answer is the often-quoted verses in the Old and in the New Testament.

Deuteronomy 19:15 (KJV)
” 15 One witness shall not rise up against a man for any iniquity, or for any sin, in any sin that he sinneth: at the mouth of two witnesses, or at the mouth of three witnesses, shall the matter be established.”

2 Corinthians 13:1 (KJV)
” 1 This is the third time I am coming to you. In the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established.”

Matthew 18:16 (KJV)
” 16 But if he will not hear thee, then take with thee one or two more, that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.”

The matter could be a matter of spiritual life and death, good and evil, blessings and curses, all one and the same.

A spiritual matter is not established on a whim of fleshly experience, personal opinions, the “God told me” “I had a dream” “my pastor said” lines with no scriptural basis or confirmation.

The Spirit of the living God establishes all spiritual matters.

Amos 5:14-15 (KJV)
” 14 Seek good, and not evil, that ye may live:
and so the Lord, the God of hosts, shall be with you, as ye have spoken.
15 Hate the evil, and love the good, and establish judgment in the gate:
it may be that the Lord God of hosts will be gracious unto the remnant of Joseph.”

Psalms 99:4 (KJV)
” 4 The king’s strength also loveth judgment; thou dost establish equity,
thou executest judgment and righteousness in Jacob.”

Zechariah 4:6 (KJV)
” 6 Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the word of the Lord unto Zerubbabel, saying,
Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the Lord of hosts.”

This keeps us in SAFETY, that is, in Christ Jesus. It keeps us from fighting against God, whether sincerely in ignorance or together in opposition.

Proverbs 18:10 (KJV)
” 10 The name of the Lord is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe.”

One witness cannot establish a matter of life and death.

Deuteronomy 17:6 (KJV)
” 6 At the mouth of two witnesses, or three witnesses, shall he that is worthy of death be put to death; but at the mouth of one witness he shall not be put to death.”

Does that mean ANY two or three witness can make a diligent inquisition to establish a matter?

Mark 14:55-64 (KJV)
” 55 And the chief priests and all the council sought for witness against Jesus to put him to death; and found none.
[…Let us remember the days of King Herod. The same diligent inquisitions are still being made to find false witness against Jesus today. We MUST be aware of these schemes / wiles of the devil…but as always, a witness of two or more false persons will not agree. No lie is of the truth, regardless of the numbers of liars stacked against the truth.]

56 For many bare false witness against him, but their witness agreed not together.
57 And there arose certain, and bare false witness against him, saying,
58 We heard him say, I will destroy this temple that is made with hands, and within three days I will build another made without hands.
59 But neither so did their witness agree together.
60 And the high priest stood up in the midst, and asked Jesus, saying, Answerest thou nothing? what is it which these witness against thee?
61 But he held his peace, and answered nothing. Again the high priest asked him, and said unto him, Art thou the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?
62 And Jesus said, I am: and ye shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.
63 Then the high priest rent his clothes, and saith, What need we any further witnesses?
64 Ye have heard the blasphemy: what think ye? And they all condemned him to be guilty of death.”

Deuteronomy 17:8-9 (KJV)
“8 If there arise a matter too hard for thee in judgment, between blood and blood, between plea and plea, and between stroke and stroke, being matters of controversy within thy gates: then shalt thou arise, and get thee up into the place which the Lord thy God shall choose;
9 And thou shalt come unto the priests the Levites, and unto the judge that shall be in those days, and enquire; and they shall shew thee the sentence of judgment:”

Deuteronomy 19:16-20 (KJV)
“16 If a false witness rise up against any man to testify against him that which is wrong;
17 Then both the men, between whom the controversy is, shall stand before the Lord, before the priests and the judges, which shall be in those days;
18 And the judges shall make diligent inquisition: and, behold, if the witness be a false witness, and hath testified falsely against his brother;
19 Then shall ye do unto him, as he had thought to have done unto his brother: so shalt thou put the evil away from among you.
20 And those which remain shall hear, and fear, and shall henceforth commit no more any such evil among you.”

Let us keep in mind WHO the scripture says the two men whom the controversy is should stand BEFORE.

1.The Priests.
2.The Judges.

When are we to make diligent inquisition?

It is WHEN “a false witness rise up against any man to testify against him that which is wrong”. An ongoing trial of life within and without.

Where are we to make diligent inquisition?

“being matters of controversy within thy gates”.

Obviously if this false testimony is leveled against you or I or as a corporate body, it then becomes “within thy gates”.

We are not to meddle with strife that is NOT within thy gate, not your body/household/family. We are not to meddle in the affairs of this world.
This is meddling to our own hurt, which at times our fleshly pride wants to establish its own brand of justice.
This is a fool’s errand many find out only after wasting much time and energy.

1 Timothy 5:13 (KJV)
” 13 And withal they learn to be idle, wandering about from house to house; and not only idle, but tattlers [English meaning: A garrulous person–> excessively talkative in a rambling roundabout manner, especially in trivial matters] also and busybodies, speaking things which they ought not.”

Proverbs 26:17 (KJV)
” 17 He that passeth by, and meddleth with strife belonging not to him, is like one that taketh a dog by the ears.”

Proverbs 20:3 (KJV)
” It is an honour for a man to cease from strife: but every fool will be meddling.”

To prevent every fool from meddling, we bring the controversy before the Lord. To the Lord’s own priests and judges, let us notice, “which shall be in those days”.

Part 2

Today, who are the Priests?

(See Mike Vinson’s study on the Website on the Priesthood and Levites for more in depth studies)

1 Peter 2:5 (KJV)
” 5 Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.”

1 Peter 2:9 (KJV)
“9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:”

Malachi 2:7 (KJV)
“7 For the priest’s lips should keep knowledge, and they should seek the law at his mouth: for he is the messenger of the Lord of hosts.”

Priests are called OUT from their brothers and are given special clothing. Amongst other functions, they are anointed to teach, and carry out diligent inquisitions.

Revelation 5:10 (KJV)
” 10 And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth.”

A “diligent inquisition” by the judges is part of this reigning upon the earth in earnest NOW, not just in the distant future.

Priests keep charge of the sanctuary, the altar.

Numbers 18:1 (KJV)
” 1 And the Lord said unto Aaron, Thou and thy sons and thy father’s house with thee shall bear the iniquity of the sanctuary: and thou and thy sons with thee shall bear the iniquity of your priesthood.”

Numbers 18:5 (KJV)
” 5 And ye shall keep the charge of the sanctuary, and the charge of the altar: that there be no wrath any more upon the children of Israel.”

This all links in with keeping charge of the Truth, righteous judgment of God. Which leads us to the role of judgment, judging by the judges.

1 Corinthians 5:9-13 (KJV)
“9 I wrote unto you in an epistle not to company with fornicators: 10 Yet not altogether with the fornicators of this world, or with the covetous, or extortioners, or with idolaters; for then must ye needs go out of the world. 11 But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one no not to eat.
12 For what have I to do to judge them also that are without? do not ye judge them that are within? [“Within thy gates”]
13 But them that are without God judgeth. Therefore put away from among yourselves that wicked person.”

The judges in those days are you and I, IF the Spirit of “Christ the Judge of all” is dwelling in our hearts.

1 Corinthians 6:2 (KJV)
” 2 Do ye not know that the saints shall judge the world? and if the world shall be judged by you, are ye unworthy to judge the smallest matters?”

Their function includes this:

Deuteronomy 25:1 (KJV)
” 1 If there be a controversy between men, and they come unto judgment, that the judges may judge them; then they shall justify the righteous, and condemn the wicked.”

Deuteronomy 1:16-17 (KJV)
” 16 And I charged your judges at that time, saying, Hear the causes between your brethren, and judge righteously between every man and his brother, and the stranger that is with him. 17 Ye shall not respect persons in judgment; but ye shall hear the small as well as the great; ye shall not be afraid of the face of man; for the judgment is God’s: and the cause that is too hard for you, bring it unto me, and I will hear it.”

These judges are also known as “deliverers”, delivering the people from false witnesses and plunderers.

Judges 2:16-18 (KJV)
“16 Nevertheless the Lord raised up judges, which delivered them out of the hand of those that spoiled them. 17 And yet they would not hearken unto their judges, but they went a whoring after other gods, and bowed themselves unto them: they turned quickly out of the way which their fathers walked in, obeying the commandments of the Lord; but they did not so. 18 And when the Lord raised them up judges, then the Lord was with the judge, and delivered them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge: for it repented the Lord because of their groanings by reason of them that oppressed them and vexed them.”

It must be noted, just like priests, all one and the same person spiritually, (Christ in you!) judges are “raised up”, learning by the books, (MUST KNOW THE LAW and the LAWGIVER -Rom 7:1) learning of others, of falling and rising, to have the necessary wisdom and knowledge of God whereby all judgment are to be meted out.
It is the Spirit of the Lord that qualifies one as a judge.

Judges 3:10 (KJV)
” 10 And the Spirit of the Lord came upon him, and he judged Israel, and went out to war: and the Lord delivered Chushanrishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand; and his hand prevailed against Chushanrishathaim.”

The Lawgiver is the One that judges out of the Law himself. We can do nothing of our own selves.

Psalms 50:6 (KJV)
” 6 And the heavens shall declare his righteousness: for God is judge himself. Selah.”

1 Corinthians 4:4-5 (KJV)
” 4 For I know nothing by myself; yet am I not hereby justified: but he that judgeth me is the Lord.
5 Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come, who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts: and then shall every man have praise of God.”

There is a narrow way of correct judgment and sentencing when it comes to time. The narrow way is the way of life few enters.
The broad way which has two sides. One is hastiness in judgment, which produces death.

Priests and judges are not to make decisions, establish a matter, before fully hearing it.

Proverbs 18:13 (KJV)
” 13 He that answereth a matter before he heareth it,
it is folly and shame unto him.”

Proverbs 18:13 Spouting off before listening to the facts is both shameful and foolish. [New Living Translation]

This is often exemplified by acts of war, whether it is nations against nations, or on individual levels of men against men.

The other side is a long drawn out process where a sentence or a verdict does not seem forthcoming from the priests and the judges in the Church.
Because the sentence is prolonged and postponed, the heart of men continues to be hardened and evil continues.

Deuteronomy 17:9-11 (KJV)
” 9 And thou shalt come unto the priests the Levites, and unto the judge that shall be in those days, and enquire; and they shall shew thee the sentence of judgment: 10 And thou shalt do according to the sentence, which they of that place which the Lord shall choose shall shew thee; and thou shalt observe to do according to all that they inform thee: 11 According to the sentence of the law which they shall teach thee, and according to the judgment which they shall tell thee, thou shalt do: thou shalt not decline from the sentence which they shall shew thee, to the right hand, nor to the left.”

Ecclesiastes 8:11 (KJV)
“11 Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil.”

This often can disguise itself as a fruit of patience, and is a very difficult thing for the priests and judges to discern rightly.
A deeper instruction is given to us in Leviticus 13, which is beyond the scope of this study.
(There are some further studies on the websites, and that covers this subject)

Discerning the time is right to carry out judgment/sentencing after all diligent enquiries have been made is only WHEN grounded in the Law, the “more sure word of prophecy” of the Scripture, no stones left unturned, nothing omitted, nothing added to it, with one mind of the priests and judges.

2 Peter 1:19 (KJV)
“19 We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:”

2 Peter 1:19 (Bible in Basic English)
” 19 And so the words of the prophets are made more certain; and it is well for you to give attention to them as to a light shining in a dark place, till the dawn comes and the morning star is seen in your hearts;”

We must incline our ears to the lawgiver, and must be able to understand, interpret what He says, otherwise we will be found to be false witnesses and false judges/priests of Christ.

The inquisition must be timed well.
Too rushed and we are at the sake of making errors and killing the confidence of others.
Too late and spiritual leaven may have spread beyond control. All must be timed well, each case taken on with godly approach to be beyond reproach and. To be found standing on the Rock of God’s word, the more sure word of prophecy.

Proverbs 16:10 (KJV)
” 10 A divine sentence is in the lips of the king: his mouth transgresseth not in judgment.”

Deuteronomy 13:12-15 (KJV)
“12 If thou shalt hear say in one of thy cities, which the Lord thy God hath given thee to dwell there, saying,
13 Certain men, the children of Belial, are gone out from among you, and have withdrawn the inhabitants of their city, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which ye have not known;
14 Then shalt thou enquire, and make search, and ask diligently; and, behold, if it be truth, and the thing certain, that such abomination is wrought among you;
15 Thou shalt surely smite the inhabitants of that city with the edge of the sword, destroying it utterly, and all that is therein, and the cattle thereof, with the edge of the sword.”

To not transgress in judgment, we must know the Lawgiver, the Law, His judgments to do.
Failure to not meet this in controversies between brethren, in wars within the heart and without, through going beyond what is written, adding or subtracting from the Word is an abomination to the Lord. It will most certainly result in polluting God’s judgment, an error proceeding from the judgment seat, setting folly in great dignity and killing those who should not die, keeping alive those unclean spirits that should not live.

Ecclesiastes 10:5-6 (KJV)
” 5 There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, as an error which proceedeth from the ruler:
6 Folly is set in great dignity, and the rich sit in low place.”

Ezekiel 13:19 (KJV)
” 19 And will ye pollute me among my people for handfuls of barley and for pieces of bread, to slay the souls that should not die, and to save the souls alive that should not live, by your lying to my people that hear your lies?”

This will prolong the pain, the confusion and sorrow of heart. So this places very high importance on the role, job of each priests and judges in the Lord’s body.

An example of a true inquisition.

Here is an importance diligent inquisition made in the New Testament church arriving at a divine sentence. Notice all the parts we have learned that come together to search out a very important godly matter, from the personals, to the topic of controversy, the place, timing and eventually the verdict.
This is an example of spiritual understanding meeting practical application.

The controversy between set of Pharisees that believed versus the New Testament Church.

Acts 15:5-7 (KJV)
” 5 But there rose up certain of the sect of the Pharisees which believed, saying, That it was needful to circumcise them, and to command them to keep the law of Moses.

The judges and priests in those days:

6 And the apostles and elders came together for to consider of this matter. 7 And when there had been much disputing, Peter rose up, and said unto them, Men and brethren, ye know how that a good while ago God made choice among us, that the Gentiles by my mouth should hear the word of the gospel, and believe.”………….

More witnesses;

Acts 15:12 (KJV)
“12 Then all the multitude kept silence, and gave audience to Barnabas and Paul, declaring what miracles and wonders God had wrought among the Gentiles by them.”

The sentence:

Acts 15:19 (KJV)
” 19 Wherefore my sentence is, that we trouble not them, which from among the Gentiles are turned to God:”

Implementing the divine sentence:

Acts 15:20-23 (KJV)
” 20 But that we write unto them, that they abstain from pollutions of idols, and from fornication, and from things strangled, and from blood.
21 For Moses of old time hath in every city them that preach him, being read in the synagogues every sabbath day.
22 Then pleased it the apostles and elders, with the whole church, [1 Corinth14:29 ” 29 Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the other judge.] to send chosen men of their own company to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas; namely, Judas surnamed Barsabas, and Silas, chief men among the brethren:
23 And they wrote letters by them after this manner; The apostles and elders and brethren send greeting unto the brethren which are of the Gentiles in Antioch and Syria and Cilicia:”

This was all judgment “within the gate”.

Some other ACTIVE divine judgment and sentences in the New Testament are:

1. 1Cor 5:4 In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when ye are gathered together, and my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ, 5 To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.
2. 1Thess 3:6 Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord
Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw yourselves from every brother that walketh disorderly, and not after the tradition which he received of us.

14. And if any man obey not our word by this epistle, note that man, and have no company with him, that he may be ashamed.
15. Yet count him not as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother.

3. 1Timothy 6:3 If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness; 4 He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings, 5 Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself.

4. Romans 16:17 Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them.

Some will say these are unloving and harsh treatments of others who are believers also. But we must always keep in mind the rewards of not obeying “our word by this epistle”, of not keeping charge of the sanctuary wherein is God’s commandments.

Numbers 18:5 (KJV)
” 5 And ye shall keep the charge of the sanctuary, and the charge of the altar: that there be no wrath any more upon the children of Israel.”

Ezra 7:23 (KJV)
” 23 Whatsoever is commanded by the God of heaven, let it be diligently done for the house of the God of heaven: for why should there be wrath against the realm of the king and his sons?”

There is and will be wrath against the camp of Israel, the realm of the King and his sons (the believers) when not diligently keeping the commandment of the God of heaven.
We are given many examples throughout scripture of this wrath, which is not according to man’s thought and definitions. Not being diligent gives rise to slothful business of the Lord, which our Lord equates to as wickedness.
Our spiritual head will not continue to put up with a spiritually slothful member.

Matthews 18:32 Then his lord, after that he had called him, said unto him, O thou wicked servant, I forgave thee all that debt, because thou desiredst me:
33 Shouldest not thou also have had compassion on thy fellowservant, even as I had pity on thee
34 And his lord was wroth, and delivered him to the tormentors, till he should pay all that was due unto him.

Matthews 25:26 His lord answered and said unto him, Thou wicked and slothful servant, thou knewest that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I have not strawed:
27 Thou oughtest therefore to have put my money to the exchangers, and then at my coming I should have received mine own with usury.
28 Take therefore the talent from him, and give it unto him which hath ten talents.
29 For unto every one that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but from him that hath not shall be taken away even that which he hath.
30 And cast ye the unprofitable [ and slothful ] servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Zechariah 7:9-10 (KJV)
” 9 Thus speaketh the Lord of hosts, saying,
Execute true judgment, and shew mercy and compassions every man to his brother:
10 And oppress not the widow, nor the fatherless, the stranger, nor the poor; and let none of you imagine evil against his brother in your heart.”

Zechariah 8:16 (KJV)
“16 These are the things that ye shall do; Speak ye every man the truth to his neighbour; execute the judgment of truth and peace in your gates:”

Executing judgment speedily (with ALL DUE DILIGENCE) is saving spiritual lives and bringing glory to God.

Psalms 106:24-31 (KJV)
“24 Yea, they despised the pleasant land,
they believed not his word:
25 But murmured in their tents,
and hearkened not unto the voice of the Lord.
26 Therefore he lifted up his hand against them,
to overthrow them in the wilderness:
27 To overthrow their seed also among the nations,
and to scatter them in the lands.
28 They joined themselves also unto Baal-peor,
and ate the sacrifices of the dead.
29 Thus they provoked him to anger with their inventions:
and the plague brake in upon them.
30 Then stood up Phinehas, and executed judgment:
and so the plague was stayed.
31 And that was counted unto him for righteousness
unto all generations for evermore.”

The heart of man, like Israel according to the flesh, is set to continue to do evil had Phinehas not executed judgment speedily.

People will come at times, not only in cases of controversy, but to enquire of God’s doctrines.

Exodus 18:15-16 (KJV)
” 15 And Moses said unto his father in law, Because the people come unto me to enquire of God: 16 When they have a matter, they come unto me; and I judge between one and another, and I do make them know the statutes of God, and his laws.”

As priests and judges, a refiner of the law, we are to make the people know Christ’s ways.
It is not to be hastily done, or ignored for long periods of time.
This may quench the thirst or opportunity to witness for Jesus Christ. Hastiness can often lead to false witnesses.
We must therefore with our whole heart enquire, make diligent search, and ask our fellow labourers in the doctrine of Christ to prevent us from wandering away from God’s truth.

Psalms 119:10 With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy commandments.

This is also the role of the prophets, formerly called the seers of Israel. (1Samuel 9:9, Isaiah 19:9)

We must be aware also that some of the queries may come our ways from those with itching ears, desiring confirmation and approval of their idols of the heart.
As priests/ judges and prophets of the Lord (1Cor 14:3), all some will want to hear is “smooth things”, “good concerning them”, preservation of their carnal ways and not the destruction of the old man of sin within.
We must be careful not to exhaust our resources and time on these.

Isaiah 30:9 That this is a rebellious people, lying children, children that will not hear the law of the LORD: 10 Which say to the seers, See not; and to the prophets, Prophesy not unto us right things, speak unto us smooth things, prophesy deceits:

1 Kings 22:7-8 (KJV)
” 7 And Jehoshaphat said, Is there not here a prophet of the Lord besides, that we might enquire of him?
8 And the king of Israel said unto Jehoshaphat, There is yet one man, Micaiah the son of Imlah, by whom we may enquire of the Lord: but I hate him; for he doth not prophesy good concerning me, but evil. And Jehoshaphat said, Let not the king say so.”

Howbeit, not succumbing to these itching ears will always get us hated by the spirit of disobedience in many for the Lord’s sake.

Not all enquiries of people will be spiritually profitable or wise, but we must be patience with all such cases as much as in us, beyond reproach, yet not being slothful with our time.

Ecclesiastes 7:10 (KJV)
” 10 Say not thou, What is the cause that the former days were better than these? for thou dost not enquire wisely concerning this.”

The Lord often answers persistent unwise enquiries to teach us also His ways. He does answers fools according to their follies at times. (Proverbs 26:5)

Ezekiel 14:7-8 (KJV)
” 7 For every one of the house of Israel, or of the stranger that sojourneth in Israel, which separateth himself from me, and setteth up his idols in his heart, and putteth the stumblingblock of his iniquity before his face, and cometh to a prophet to enquire of him concerning me; I the Lord will answer him by myself:
8 And I will set my face against that man, and will make him a sign and a proverb, and I will cut him off from the midst of my people; and ye shall know that I am the Lord.”

The seer/prophet can easily get drawn into a false thing.

It is always important to keep in perspective the whole matter of an enquiry, or controversy that comes by discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart by the Word.
Failure to not take an oversight can be catastrophic, leading to growing defilement and bitterness, troubling oneself and eventually spreading in the camp, defiling the whole body.

Hebrews 12:15 Looking diligently […why?]
>>>>lest any man fail of the grace of God;
>>>>lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled;

Diligently (Gk 1983-ep-ee-skop-eh’-o) to oversee; by implication, to be aware:–look diligently, take the oversight.

If any man desires the role of a bishop in the body of Christ, then being diligent in all things is a necessity.

1Tim 3:1 This is a faithful saying: If a man desires the position of a bishop, he desires a good work. (NKJV)

If Jesus Christ is dwelling in your heart, (Rom 8:9-11) then that “divine nature” (2 Peter 2:4) will continually be exhibited not only to be diligent in your own walk, but also to have natural care and affection for the soul of others, as a godly mother and father cherishes their own sons and daughters.

1Peter 2:25 For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.

This is how we all fulfill the word of God (Colossians 1:25, Mathews 4:4) in the role of a bishop spiritually, by taking the oversight, looking diligently and being an example of Christ to all around us.

1Peter 5:2 Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, [..that is, ”looking diligently”] not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind, 3 Neither as being lords over God’s heritage, but being examples to the flock.

1 Thessalonians 2:7 But we were gentle among you, just as a nursing mother cherishes her own children
8 So, affectionately longing for you, we were well pleased to impart to you not only the gospel of God, but also our own lives, because you had become dear to us.

Verse 11 as you know how we exhorted, and comforted, and charged every one of you, as a father does his own children, (NKJV)

(Let us notice the spirit of Paul and the apostles as parents to the church, taking the oversight.)

In the matter of a godly enquiry, we must always take an oversight and keep in perspective whose benefit and profit the outcome of the matter is for.

It is for yourself to overcome any root of bitterness and thereby not defiling all that are dwelling in the body of Christ, the house of God.
By being diligent, you will be saving yourself and your household, caring for the state of others.

Philippians 2:20 For I have no man likeminded, who will naturally care for your state. 21 For all seek their own, […not looking diligently as an overseer…] not the things which are Jesus Christ’s.

The things that are Jesus Christ’s are all summarized in one, His Doctrine.

1 Timothy 4:16 Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.

Ezra 7:23 (KJV)
” 23 Whatsoever is commanded by the God of heaven, let it be diligently done for the house of the God of heaven: for why should there be wrath against the realm of the king and his sons?”

“Them that hear thee’ means;

Gaining a brother.

Matthew 18:15 (KJV)
“15 Moreover if thy brother shall trespass against thee, go and tell him his fault between thee and him alone: if he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother.”

Keeping unity and peace of Israel.

1 Corinthians 12:25-26 (KJV)
” 25 That there should be no schism in the body; but that the members should have the same care one for another. 26 And whether one member suffer, all the members suffer with it; or one member be honoured, all the members rejoice with it.”

Taking the oversight (that is, looking diligently) includes us asking:

a) Is the whole sum of God’s word being considered? (Psalm119:160 NASB)

No lie is of the truth, and keeping the Sum of the Word is our confidence in executing judgment.

1John 2:21 I have not written unto you because ye know not the truth, but because ye know it, and that no lie [=false knowledge] is of the truth.

b) Is the intent of the heart by the words being spoken and actions in line with the Word of God?

There are more mature judgments requiring us to be very diligent in the Word of God, to know Him, and become very skillful in discerning thoughts and intentions of the heart.

Malachi 3:17 And they shall be mine, saith the LORD of hosts, in that day when I make up my jewels; and I will spare them, as a man spareth his own son that serveth him. 18 Then shall ye return, and discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him that serveth God and him that serveth him not.

Hebrews 4:12 (KJV)
” 12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”

The faith of God’s elect (Titus 1:1) requires us to be diligent in all our ways.

Exodus 15:26 (KJV)
” 26 And said, If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the Lord thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the Lord that healeth thee.”

It is by GIVING ALL DILIGENCE in our enquiries of God, in settling a matter of controversies, in our walk of faith that we abound in the fruit of the Spirit, adding divine nature to ourselves and becoming more and more as He is in the world.

2 Peter 1:5-8 (KJV)
“5 And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge;
6 And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness;
7 And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.
8 For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

I pray we will be given strength to endure to the end, no longer being spiritually slothful and lethargic, but showing all diligence unto the end–Jesus Christ.

Hebrews 6:10-12 (KJV)
” 10 For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have shewed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister.
11 And we desire that every one of you do shew the same diligence to the full assurance of hope unto the end:
12 That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises.”

Ezra 7:23 (KJV)
” 23 Whatsoever is commanded by the God of heaven, let it be diligently done for the house of the God of heaven: for why should there be wrath against the realm of the king and his sons?”
