Study Notes:

1Ti 3:3 Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient (G1933), not a brawler, not covetous;

Not quarrelsome (brawler)

G269
ἄμαχος
amachos
am’-akh-os
From G1 (as a negative particle) and G3163; peaceable: – not a brawler.

G3163
μάχη
machē
makh’-ay
From G3164; a battle, that is, (figuratively) controversy: – fighting, strive, striving.

Tit 3:9 But avoid foolish questions, and genealogies, and contentions, and strivings about the law; for they are unprofitable and vain.

2Ti 2:23 But foolish and unlearned questions avoid, knowing that they do gender strifes.

Jas 4:1 From whence come wars and fightings among you? Come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members?
Jas 4:2 Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not.
Jas 4:3 Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.

Elders are dying to the lust of the flesh and are no longer ruled by it.

Gal 5:24 And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.

1Jn 2:16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

Rom 6:14 ESV For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.

This does not mean that elders are perfected in the flesh. We will have to wage war with our old man until we die.

Php 3:12 Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus.

Here in 2 Corinthians we can see a shadow of this battle.

2Co 7:5 For, when we were come into Macedonia, our flesh had no rest, but we were troubled on every side; without were fightings, within were fears.

These are the spirits that we are fighting.

G1855- without
ἔξωθεν
exōthen

Mat 23:25 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess.

1Pe 3:3 Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel;

The lust of the flesh is to focus on the outside of the cup, but our focus is on the inside of the cup.
We “fight” with our flesh just as Paul had to fight with those around him. Yet the qualification for an elder is to not be a fighter… how does that work? Read the next verses.

2Co 7:6 Nevertheless God, that comforteth those that are cast down, comforted us by the coming of Titus;
2Co 7:7 And not by his coming only, but by the consolation wherewith he was comforted in you, when he told us your earnest desire, your mourning, your fervent mind toward me; so that I rejoiced the more.

God comforts us so we can live by these verses.

Rom 12:17 Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all.
Rom 12:18 If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.

While elders do not engage in foolish and stupid arguments or fight because of the lust of the flesh, they do have to rebuke those who contradict the truth.

Tit 1:9 (ESV) He must hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in sound doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it.

Elders have scriptural boundaries when dealing with others. They will admonish a heretic twice and then stop. They know that if someone cannot hear the truth after two admonitions, that the Lord is not working with them.

Tit 3:10 A man that is an heretick after the first and second admonition reject;
Tit 3:11 Knowing that he that is such is subverted, and sinneth, being condemned of himself.

Someone who desires to fight with others will go back and forth countless times, getting more and more upset. We are commanded to make war and to fight in the scriptures, but we do it according to the Word of God. Our warfare is spiritual.

Eph 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
Eph 6:13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

2Ti 2:3 Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.
2Ti 2:4 No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.

We will contend with evil spirits sent to trouble us in our own heavens, and we have to deal with evil spirits in others that will persecute us. Either way we must wage war according to the scriptural pattern and not be quarrelsome or a brawler.
