Study Notes:

1Ti 3:3 Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient (G1933), not a brawler, not covetous;

Gentle The Greek word translated as patient in the KJV is actually better translated as gentle. It is translated this way in other versions.

1Ti 3:3 ESV not a drunkard, not violent but gentle (G1933), not quarrelsome, not a lover of money.

1Ti 3:3 YLT not given to wine, not a striker, not given to filthy lucre, but gentle (G1933), not contentious, not a lover of money,

G1933 ἐπιεικής epieikēs ep-ee-i-kace’ From G1909 and G1503; appropriate, that is, (by implication) mild: – gentle, moderation, patient.

Jas 3:17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.

1Pe 2:18 Servants, be subject to your masters with all fear; not only to the good and gentle, but also to the froward

Tit 3:1 Remind them to be subject to rulers and authorities, to obey, to be ready for every good work, Tit 3:2 to speak evil of no one, to be peaceable, gentle, showing all humility to all men.

Php 4:5 NKJV Let your gentleness be known to all men. The Lord is at hand.

A similar concept to gentle in the Old Testament is the word translated as “soft”.

Pro 25:15 By long forbearing is a prince persuaded, and a soft tongue breaketh the bone.

Pro 15:1 A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.

Gentleness is the opposite of being harsh. This is closely related to being kind towards others.

1Co 13:4 Love is patient and kind (G5541)

G5541 χρηστεῦομαι chrēsteuomai khraste-yoo’-om-ahee Middle voice from G5543; to show oneself useful, that is, act benevolently: – be kind. Here are some examples of the root work G5543 and a closely related word G5544

Luk 6:35 But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping For nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind (G5543) unto the unthankful and to the evil.

Eph 4:32 ESV And be ye kind (G5543) one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.

Elders know that they have been forgiven much and that God has been kind to them. This gives them the ability to show kindness and gentleness to others when they are unthankful or even enemies.

Rom 2:4 ESV Or do you presume on the riches of his kindness (G5543) and forbearance and patience, not knowing that God’s kindness (G5344) is meant to lead you to repentance?

See Psalms 107. God’s goodness is to bring us to our wits end to deliver us from evil. It is also important that elders correct others in gentleness and humility.

Gal 6:1 ESV Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted.

The word for gentleness above is: G4236 πρᾳότης praotēs prah-ot’-ace From G4235; gentleness; by implication humility: – meekness.

1Co 4:21 ESV What do you wish? Shall I come to you with a rod, or with love in a spirit of gentleness?

2Co 10:1 ESV I, Paul, myself entreat you, by the meekness (G4236) and gentleness of Christ–I who am humble when face to face with you, but bold toward you when I am away!–

This is one of the fruits of the spirit:

Gal 5:22 ESV But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, Gal 5:23 gentleness (G4236), self-control; against such things there is no law.

This topic is so important that it is mentioned in nearly every one of Paul’s letters.

Eph 4:2 ESV with all humility and gentleness (G4236), with patience, bearing with one another in love,

Col 3:12 Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness (G4236), and patience, Col 3:13 bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.

2Ti 2:24 ESV And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but kind to everyone, able to teach, patiently enduring evil, 2Ti 2:25 correcting his opponents with gentleness (G4236). God may perhaps grant them repentance leading to a knowledge of the truth, 2Ti 2:26 and they may come to their senses and escape from the snare of the devil, after being captured by him to do his will.

Tit 3:2ESV To speak evil of no man, to be no brawlers, but gentle, shewing all meekness (G4236) unto all men.

The root of being gentle and meek is to be humbled.

1Pe 5:5 Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, All of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. 1Pe 5:6 Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, That he may exalt you in due time:

How was Paul made to be gentle and meek with those he taught? Christ caused him to persecute the Church and then humbled him by making that known to Paul.

1Co 15:9 For I am the least of the apostles, unworthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. 1Co 15:10 But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me was not in vain.

This experience made Paul very understanding and gentle when it came to dealing with others sins. He has lived Christӳ words in Luke.

Luk 7:47 Therefore I say to you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven, for she loved much. But to whom little is forgiven, the same loves little.”

What are some qualities of love?

1Co 13:4 Love is patient and kind

We become patient, kind, gentle and meek when we have been forgiven much. Our ability to be kind to others in their sins is directly related to how much we realize that we are a complete beast. If we cannot see the Lord’s kindness to us in light of all our evil, then we will not have kindness towards others. If you find yourself struggling with gentleness, then ask the Lord to reveal his kindness towards you. Mediate on all the ways he has provided for you and shown you mercy. Your gentleness towards others will abound in due time.
