Answer / Study Notes:

Hi J_____,

This is a challenging topic. I think of all the doctrines I have learned in the truth, this has been the most difficult for me to understand.

A major key is understanding that the Greek and Hebrew words for “God” are simply a title that can be used in many different ways, and do not necessarily refer to only God the Father.

For example in the Hebrew we are called “gods”.

Psa 82:6 I said, “You are gods, And all of you are children of the Most High.

This is the Hebrew word “Elohim”, but can refer to a judge or ruler.

אלהים ‘ĕlôhı̂ym el-o-heem’
Plural of H433; gods in the ordinary sense; but specifically used (in the plural thus, especially with the article) of the supreme God; occasionally applied by way of deference to magistrates; and sometimes as a superlative: – angels, X exceeding, God (gods) (-dess, -ly), X (very) great, judges, X mighty.

Jesus quotes Psalms 82:6 when accused of claiming to be God.

(Joh 10:33 NKJV) The Jews answered Him, saying, “For a good work we do not stone You, but for blasphemy, and because You, being a Man, make Yourself God.”
(Joh 10:34 NKJV) Jesus answered them, “Is it not written in your law, ‘I SAID, “YOU ARE GODS” ‘?
(Joh 10:35 NKJV) If He called them gods, to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture cannot be broken),
(Joh 10:36 NKJV) do you say of Him whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world, ‘You are blaspheming,’ because I said, ‘I am the Son of God’?
(Joh 10:37 NKJV) If I do not do the works of My Father, do not believe Me;
(Joh 10:38 NKJV) but if I do, though you do not believe Me, believe the works, that you may know and believe that the Father is in Me, and I in Him.”

The word in Greek that is translated as “Gods” above is “theos” which is the equivalent of the Hebrew “elohim”.

θεός theos theh’-os
Of uncertain affinity; a deity, especially (with G3588) the supreme Divinity; figuratively a magistrate; by Hebraism very: – X exceeding, God, god [-ly, -ward].

This word in and of itself does not refer only to God the Father, but rather is a generic term for a ruler which is often used to refer to God the father when context makes that clear. For example:

(1Co 8:5 KJV) For though there be that are called gods (theos), whether in heaven or in earth, (as there be gods (theos) many, and lords many,)
(1Co 8:6 KJV) But to us there is but one God (theos), the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him.

There in that one verse we see the word “theos” used many different ways, and we can clearly see that there are many gods and many lords. We know that the many “so called ” gods, like Baal and Dagon in the Old Testament, do not even exist. But there are other gods that are very real, such as our Lord and God, Jesus Christ, and Satan who is also called god.

(2Co 4:3 NKJV) But even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing,
(2Co 4:4 NKJV) whose minds the god (theos) of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them.

(2Ti 2:26 NKJV) and that they may come to their senses and escape the snare of the devil, having been taken captive by him to do his will.

Satan is also called a “ruler” which is also translated as “prince”.

(Joh 12:31 NKJV) Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out.

(Joh 16:11 NKJV) of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.

(Joh 14:30 KJV) Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me.

ἄρχων archōn ar’-khone
Present participle of G757; a first (in rank or power): – chief (ruler), magistrate, prince, ruler.

Thomas called Jesus, “my Lord and my God”.

(Joh 20:28 NKJV) And Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God (theos)!”
(Joh 20:29 NKJV) Jesus said to him, “Thomas, because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

Christ tells us in the book of Revelation that he will be our God when we overcome.

(Rev 21:4 NKJV) And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.”
(Rev 21:5 NKJV) Then He who sat on the throne said, “Behold, I make all things new.” And He said to me, “Write, for these words are true and faithful.”
(Rev 21:6 NKJV) And He said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. I will give of the fountain of the water of life freely to him who thirsts.
(Rev 21:7 NKJV) He who overcomes shall inherit all things, and I will be his God and he shall be My son.

We know that this is Christ speaking, because in Revelation 1 he makes it quite clear that he is “the Alpha and the Omega” and ” the Lord Almighty”.

Rev 1:1 The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave Him to show His servants—things which must shortly take place. And He sent and signified it by His angel to His servant John,

Rev 1:8 “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End,” says the Lord, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.”

The word for “Lord” is “Kurios” in Greek, which is yet another title that can be used in different ways.

κύριος kurios koo’-ree-os
From κῦρος kuros (supremacy); supreme in authority, that is, (as noun) controller; by implication Mr. (as a respectful title): – God, Lord, master, Sir.

Here are a few more verses to to make it abundantly clear that Jesus is the Alpha and Omega.

(Rev 22:12 NKJV) “And behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to give to every one according to his work.
(Rev 22:13 NKJV) I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, the First and the Last.”
(Rev 22:14 NKJV) Blessed are those who do His commandments, that they may have the right to the tree of life, and may enter through the gates into the city.
(Rev 22:15 NKJV) But outside are dogs and sorcerers and sexually immoral and murderers and idolaters, and whoever loves and practices a lie.
(Rev 22:16 NKJV) “I, Jesus, have sent My angel to testify to you these things in the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, the Bright and Morning Star.”

Jesus is also called the Living God. Remember it is Christ that judges and saves.

(Heb 10:30 NKJV) For we know Him who said, “VENGEANCE IS MINE, I WILL REPAY,” says the Lord. And again, “THE LORD WILL JUDGE HIS PEOPLE.”
(Heb 10:31 NKJV) It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

(1Ti 4:10 NKJV) For to this end we both labor and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Savior of all men, especially of those who believe.

Christ is also the creator.

(Joh 1:3 NKJV) All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.

(Col 1:16 NKJV) For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him.

(Act 14:15 NKJV) and saying, “Men, why are you doing these things? We also are men with the same nature as you, and preach to you that you should turn from these useless things to the living God, who made the heaven, the earth, the sea, and all things that are in them,

Clearly Jesus is a God, but he is not God the Father of whom are all things including Jesus Christ himself.

(Joh 17:3 NKJV) And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.

God the Father is the only true God because Jesus Christ’s reign is only temporary to accomplish a specific purpose.

(1Co 15:24 NKJV) Then comes the end, when He delivers the kingdom to God the Father, when He puts an end to all rule and all authority and power.
(1Co 15:25 NKJV) For He must reign till He has put all enemies under His feet.
(1Co 15:26 NKJV) The last enemy that will be destroyed is death.
(1Co 15:27 NKJV) For “HE HAS PUT ALL THINGS UNDER HIS FEET.” But when He says “all things are put under Him,” it is evident that He who put all things under Him is excepted.
(1Co 15:28 NKJV) Now when all things are made subject to Him, then the Son Himself will also be subject to Him who put all things under Him, that God may be all in all.

Christ’s time ruling and reigning is for the purpose of judging the world and bringing all things under him, that he may turn it all over to the Father in due time.

(Joh 5:22 NKJV) For the Father judges no one, but has committed all judgment to the Son,
(Joh 5:23 NKJV) that all should honor the Son just as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.

Jesus Christ is the one carrying out the judgment.

This is why salvation belongs to Jesus Christ, for he is the one that has been sent to save us.

(Rev 19:1 NKJV) After these things I heard a loud voice of a great multitude in heaven, saying, “Alleluia! Salvation and glory and honor and power belong to the Lord our God!
(Rev 19:2 NKJV) For true and righteous are His judgments, because He has judged the great harlot who corrupted the earth with her fornication; and He has avenged on her the blood of His servants shed by her.”

(Luk 19:9 NKJV) And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because he also is a son of Abraham;
(Luk 19:10 NKJV) for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”

The Son, Jesus Christ, has been given all judgment and honor.

Joh 5:22 For the Father judges no one, but has committed all judgment to the Son,
Joh 5:23 that all should honor the Son just as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.

The Church of God is the same thing as Christ’s body, the Church.

Act 20:28 Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.

Eph 5:23 For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body.
Eph 5:24 Therefore, just as the church is subject to Christ,

(Col 1:24 NKJV) I now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up in my flesh what is lacking in the afflictions of Christ, for the sake of His body, which is the church,

There are numerous times in the New Testament that a distinction is made between Jesus Christ and God the Father.

(Joh 17:3 NKJV) And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.

(1Th 1:1 NKJV) Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy, To the church of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

(2Th 1:1 NKJV) Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy, To the church of the Thessalonians in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ:

Eph 1:2 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

I hope you can see now that there are many gods and many lords, but only one true God of whom are all things, and his son Jesus Christ who is our God, King of Kings and Lord of Lords until the kingdom is returned to the Father.

Your Brother in Christ,
