Who is the Son of Perdition and the Antichrist?

When someone asks who is the son of perdition, the man of sin, or the antichrist, they almost always want the name of some specific person.
Many people in the Church today point to various well known political leaders. This very same thing has been going on since the time of Christ.

Most of the Christian world is looking in the wrong place. They’re trying to find this one person that is so pivotal to end time prophecy.
Let’s examine what the scriptures say, and see if we can determine from the Word of God who really is the antichrist. The answer will shock you.
The Greek word translated as “antichrist” is G500 antichristos. This word is made by simply adding the prefix “anti” to the word for Christ, “christos”.

G500
ἀντίχριστος
antichristos
an-tee’-khris-tos
From G473 and G5547; an opponent of the Messiah: – antichrist.

There are only four places in all of scripture that this word appears, so let’s look at all of them in detail.

1Jn 2:18 Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time.

John wrote this verse of scripture somewhere around 100 AD. He says that “IT IS THE LAST TIME”, and that there are “MANY ANTICHRISTS” already present when he is writing. Most people believe that the antichrist will appear right before the end of the world, but if that is true then why are we here discussing this 2000 years later? So we have learned three key things already from just this one verse.

  1. There are many antichrists.
  2. The antichrists started appearing in the early Church around 100 AD or earlier
  3. “The last time” does not mean the end of the physical world.

In the very next verse John goes on to explain that some people “went out from us”. Those that went out are some of the many antichrists that he just referred to in verse 18.

1Jn 2:19 They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.

So what were these people doing that caused them to be labeled as “antichrist” and leave the fellowship of the early Church? John tells us in verses 22 and 23.

1Jn 2:22 Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son.
1Jn 2:23 Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father: (but) he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also.

Anyone that denies that Jesus is the Christ is an antichrist, meaning they are against/ opposed to the true Christ. Who rejected Christ when he came? HIS OWN PEOPLE, the Jews did. The religious leaders of Israel were the ones that put the true Christ to death because they did not recognize him.

Joh 1:10 He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.
Joh 1:11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not.

Christ warned his disciples that many false Christ’s would arise to deceive and lead people astray.

Mat 24:24 For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.

Christ gave clear instructions about how to identify these false prophets.

Mat 7:15 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.
Mat 7:16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?
Mat 7:17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.

It is not always easy to identify an antichrist, false Christ, or false prophet, because they are disguised in sheep’s clothing. God uses the symbolism of
sheep to represent members of his Church, the Body of Christ. So these antichrists actually look like followers of Christ on the outside! They may use Christ’s name, but they do not have his doctrine.

2Jn 1:9 Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the Doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son.

When we are able to identify someone that does NOT have Christ’s doctrine, we are not to fellowship with them. This is why in verse 19 John talks about those that “went out from us”.

2Jn 1:10 If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed:
2Jn 1:11 For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds.

1Jn 2:19 They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.

Jesus Christ taught the truth, and his Apostles taught the truth. Paul, an Apostle of Jesus Christ, knew that these false Christ’s were going to appear in the Churches that he established and bring false doctrines to lead the flock astray. So in Act 20 he is warning the Elders of Ephesus to be on guard for these “grievous wolves”.

Act 20:29 For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock.
Act 20:30 Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them.
Act 20:31 Therefore watch, and remember, that by the space of three years I ceased not to warn every one night and day with tears.

These wolves are able to enter in because THEY LOOK LIKE SHEEP. It takes time to see their fruit and recognize that they do not bring the doctrine of Christ.
Many people in the Body of Christ that Paul was close with, turned out to be grievous wolves, and abandoned Paul and the doctrine of Christ.

2Ti 1:15 This thou knowest, that all they which are in Asia be turned away from me; of whom are Phygellus and Hermogenes.

2Ti 2:17 And their word will eat as doth a canker: of whom is Hymenaeus and Philetus;
2Ti 2:18 Who concerning the truth have erred, saying that the resurrection is past already; and overthrow the faith of some.

This is an example of what an antichrist does; they speak lies and overthrow the faith of others. Even Titus, who Paul at one time trusted to ordain elders in Crete, abandoned the faith.

2Ti 4:10 For Demas hath forsaken me, having loved this present world, and is departed unto Thessalonica; Crescens to Galatia, Titus unto Dalmatia.

I’ll try to demonstrate that the majority began to fall away from the true teachings of Jesus Christ very early in Church history. This scripture is truer than most realized.

Mat 22:14 For many are called, but few are chosen.

In Paul’s time EVERYONE in Asia fell away. The church in Ephesus and Galatia were both in Asia. Remember from Acts 20 that Paul warned the Ephesian Elders about what was to come. The false prophets did come and lead everyone in Asia astray.
Now let’s look at some of the specific false doctrines that those with the spirit of the antichrist will teach as truth and deceive many.

1Jn 4:2 Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:
1Jn 4:3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.

2Jn 1:7 For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist.

Some people deny that Christ lived on this earth as a real person. This is not a very deceptive doctrine, it’s actually quite obvious and easy to identify. Virtually every Christian Church today believes that Jesus Christ was a real person and lived on this earth.
John is actually exposing a doctrine that is far more insidious. This false doctrine has infected nearly every Christian living today.
Jesus Christ is not God the Father in human form as most Churches teach. Jesus Christ was created by God, and then used by God to create everything that exists. Christ was then born of a woman into the very world that he created. The flesh that he dwelled in for his entire life on this earth was the exact same flesh that you and I have. It is weak, corrupted, and cannot inherit the Kingdom of God.

Gal 4:4 But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his son, made of a woman, made under the law

1Co 15:50 Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption.

This verse in Psalms is talking about Jesus Christ.

Psa 51:5 Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.

He can identify with us, because he was tempted just like we are, yet he never broke any of God’s laws.

Heb 4:15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.

Christ suffered in the flesh and learned through his experiences.

Heb 5:8 Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered;

He never trespassed God’s laws because he had a full measure of the Spirit of the Father, unlike us, who only have the spirit in down payment form.

Joh 3:34 For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him.
Joh 3:35 The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand.

2Co 1:22 Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest (down payment) of the Spirit in our hearts.

We have already written in great detail about how Christ was made in sinful flesh and also about his relationship to the Father. You can find those studies at the following links below.

For now, we need to move on and discuss the effects of not believing that Christ was actually made in sinful flesh. It is like building a house, if the foundation is crooked, then the entire house is going to be crooked.
The common Christian doctrine of today is that Christ was fully God and fully man at the same time.
False Christ’s spread this lie and makes Christ very different from the rest of humanity.

If Christ did not have our nature, then how did he suffer in such a way that he can identify with our suffering?
Christ is different in that he had a full measure of the Spirit, the very same Spirit that we will all have in fullness one day. Christ was also used by
God to create everything that exists, which experience no human will ever have.

So now we have a false doctrine that denies the true nature of Christ. This false doctrine is used to support other false doctrines and weave an intricate web of lies that leads the majority astray from the True Christ. Just as the
Jews rejected Christ when he physically lived on earth, so the Churches of today reject the true doctrine of Christ and actually persecute those who preach the truth of the Word.
Just as Christ was born in sinful flesh, so was the first man Adam created with sinful flesh. The Christian world today teaches very differently. The majority says that Adam and Eve were made perfect and given a free will, which gave them the ability to choose to disobey God.

In the book of Romans, Paul uses the analogy of a potter working with clay to describe our relationship to God.

Rom 9:20 Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus?
Rom 9:21 Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour?

Paul got this from the Old Testament. Jeremiah clearly says that the vessel of clay was MADE MARRED, not perfect as we have been taught.

Jer 18:4 And the vessel that he made of clay was marred in the hand of the potter: so he made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it.

Paul says this another way in Romans 8:20.

Rom 8:20 For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope,

This means that God is the one that gave us our sinful nature, and God is the one responsible for and causing EVERYTHING that happens, even our sin.

Eph 1:11 In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will:

Isa 63:17 O LORD, why hast thou made us to err from thy ways, And hardened our heart from thy fear? Return for thy servants’ sake, the tribes of thine inheritance.

Did Pharaoh choose of his own free will to not let Israel go?

Exo 9:12 And the LORD hardened the heart of Pharaoh, and he hearkened not unto them; as the LORD had spoken unto Moses.

No, God hardened his heart.
Here is a study that covers the lie of free will in much greater detail:

http://aionios.com/2011-12/does-mankind-have-free-will/

Next, this lie about free will is used to support the idea of God condemning much of his creation to everlasting punishment. Judgment is not about eternally torturing the disobedient, it is used by loving parents to correct their children to obey the truth.
God is going to chasten all of humanity to obey his truth that we may all dwell together in unity.

1Ti 2:3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour;
1Ti 2:4 Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.

Heb 12:6 For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth Every son whom he receiveth.

I realize that I’m going through these doctrines very quickly and not giving much detail at all. You can read the studies I have referenced for detailed information on all of these topics.
I’m just trying to point out that there has been a great apostasy. There are very, very few that believe and teach the truth of the scriptures.

I grew up going to a Christian school for 13 years, and then went to work for Campus Crusade for Christ during college.
I whole heartedly taught others all of the false doctrines that I have described above and many others that I did not mention.
Around 2007, I had an experience much like Paul on the road to Damascus. I did not physically see a vision or hear Christ’s voice, but it was made quite clear to me that I was persecuting the true Jesus Christ.

Act 9:4 And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?
Act 9:5 And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks.

Paul was going to kill Christians that believed and taught the true doctrine of Christ.
I despised people, who thought that God was going to save all men, and vehemently warned others about the evil of that doctrine. I taught that God would literally torture the majority of his creation forever with no hope
of escape. I came to see that I was in fact one of the antichrists that the scriptures warn us about.
There are other names given to describe the antichrist. Let’s look at “the beast” first.

Rev 13:4 And they worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast: and they worshipped the beast, saying, Who is like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him?
Rev 13:5 And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months.
Rev 13:6 And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven.
Rev 13:7 And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations.

This is exactly what I was doing, blaspheming against God by teaching these terrible lies and false doctrines. I thought I was serving God, but was in fact warring against him.
The book of Revelation is terribly misunderstood. Most teach that this is a prophetic book about events surrounding the end of the world. There will certainly be an end to this physical world, and all flesh for that matter, but the book of Revelation is not giving us those details.
I want to point out a few things in the first three verses of the Book that you have probably never noticed before.

Rev 1:1 The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him, to shew unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass; and he sent and signified it by his angel unto his servant John:
Rev 1:2 Who bare record of the word of God, and of the testimony of Jesus Christ, and of all things that he saw.
Rev 1:3 Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand.

First of all the book is “signified”, meaning that it’s all symbols. Nothing is to be taken literally or physically. Secondly, we are to read, hear AND KEEP the things written therein.
The book of Revelation is actually about how God reveals to us that you and I are in fact the antichrist, beast, and false prophet. The vast majority of Christianity is so busy looking for the antichrist somewhere in the world that they never look in the mirror.

Mat 7:5 Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother’s eye.

Mike Vinson has done an extensive study on the Book of Revelation that can be found at the links below:

http://iswasandwillbe.com/PHPseries/Book_of_Revelation/VID_Book_of_Revelation.php

This is what Solomon said in Ecclesiastes 3.

Ecc 3:18 I said in mine heart concerning the estate of the sons of men, that God might manifest them, and that they might see that they themselves are beasts.

Consider this verse as well:

Rev 13:18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.

Now let’s examine 2 Thessalonians 2, the man of sin, son of perdition.

2Th 2:3 Let no one deceive you by any means; for that Day will not come unless the falling away comes first, and the man of sin is revealed, the son of perdition,

We have to all “fall away” and live in disobedience, so that God can reveal to us that we are the man of sin.

2Th 2:1 Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him,

Just like the antichrist, most are focused on an outward future return of Christ himself. There will no doubt be a return of Christ, just as there will be an end to this physical world, but that is not Paul’s focus. Look at what he says in verse 2.

2Th 2:2 That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand.

Just like the antichrists were present at the time the NT was written, so also was Christ appearing. The day was at hand 2000 years ago! Christ told the the Pharisees this very same truth.

Luk 17:20 Now when He was asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, He answered them and said, “The kingdom of God does not come with observation;
Luk 17:21 nor will they say, ‘See here!’ or ‘See there!’ For indeed, The kingdom of God is within you.”

The Pharisees were looking for the messiah to establish a physical kingdom on this earth, but Christ had come to change the hearts of men not to rule the physical world at that time.
Paul and Christ are both saying that the coming of Christ is within us, just as the antichrist is revealed within us.

Col 1:27 To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:

Let’s read some more in 2 Thessalonians.

2Th 2:4 who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God or that is worshiped, so that he sits as God in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God.

Where is the temple of God?

1Co 3:16 Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?
1Co 3:17 If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; For the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.

1Co 6:16 And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.

1Co 6:19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
1Co 6:20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.

When we think that we have a free will and teach false doctrines about God, we are in fact defiling the temple of God. That is how we live these verses in 2 Thessalonians we just read.
Paul explains to the Ephesians that they were in fact children of wrath before they became adopted sons of God.

Eph 2:1 And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;
Eph 2:2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:
Eph 2:3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.

Most Christians today admit that they were children of disobedience when they were living according to the ways of the world, but once they started following Church doctrine they think they are now following the true Christ.
This is exactly what happened to me. I came to what I thought was the true Christ and zealously taught those doctrines for years. However I was actually following a false Christ, believing all kinds of lies.
Let’s continue in 2 Thessalonians.

2Th 2:5 Do you not remember that when I was still with you I told you these things?
2Th 2:6 And now you know what is restraining, that he may be revealed in his own time.
2Th 2:7 For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work; only He who now restrains will do so until He is taken out of the way.
2Th 2:8 And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord will consume with the breath of His mouth and destroy with the brightness of His coming.

The “lawless one” is actually describing you and me when we are being disobedient to the doctrine of Christ. When Christ comes within us, the brightness of his coming reveals our sinful ways and begins to removes this lawlessness from our lives.

2Th 2:9 The coming of the lawless one is according to the working of satan, with all power, signs, and lying wonders,
2Th 2:10 and with all unrighteous deception among those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved.
2Th 2:11 And for this reason God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe the lie,

The reason that we are caught in all of this disobedience and evil, is because God sends us strong delusion and causes us to believe a lie.
Nearly every Pastor of every Church in the world believes they are teaching the truth of God’s word, while in fact they are completely blind to what the Word of God actually says.
You and I are the exact same way, until God opens our eyes through his spirit.

Here is a study series on the topic of Strong Delusion.

http://aionios.com/2011-12/strong-delusion/

God has hidden his truth behind the letters of the scriptures, just as Christ spoke in parables to keep the meaning hidden from the masses.

Matt 13:10 And the disciples came, and said unto him, Why speakest thou unto them in parables?
Matt 13:11 He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given.
Matt 13:12 For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall Have more abundance: but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that he hath.
Matt 13:13 Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand.

Paul also explains to the Romans that God is the one that causes us to not be able to see and hear his truth.

Rom 11:7 What then? Israel hath not obtained that which he seeketh for; but the election hath obtained it, and the rest were blinded
Rom 11:8 (According as it is written, God hath given them the spirit of slumber, eyes that they should not see, and ears that they should not hear;)unto this day.
Rom 11:9 And David saith, Let their table be made a snare, and a trap, and a stumblingblock, and a recompence unto them:
Rom 11:10 Let their eyes be darkened, that they may not see, and bow down their back alway.

So in conclusion, God has sent us strong delusion, which causes us to believe many false doctrines. In due time he will open our eyes to the truth and deliver us from this bondage for our good and his glory.
All of the scriptures about the antichrist, man of sin, son of perdition, false prophet, and the beast, are actually symbols and parables about our own disobedience to God’s word.
This brief study just scratches the surface of the many false doctrines and lies that are being taught in the world today.

I hope you will take some time to look at the following two websites and learn more about the true Christ.
